OK - I just took a road trip and filled up 4 times A/C turned off. Both mountain and flat roads. Drove from Phoenix to Las Vegas to St. George, UT. Here is what I got for MPG - Tank 1 - 12.4 Tank 2 - 12.5 Tank 3 - 14.1 Tank 4 - 14.0 City - 13.5 So lets just say I wasn't overly impressed. I guess I had my foot in it too much. I was really looking forward to what a lot of people were saying they are getting. There you have it. pgaduane

I hear you. But keep in mind mine is NOT an Alpha. I was hoping for a little more. My Suburban I sold almost got that. So whatever. Still fun to drive and had a good time. pgaduane

Pgaduane, how many miles do you have? My new 2008 3.7L automatic started out at 15.0 mpg. The last three tanks each averaged 17.0-17.5 mpg, now at 2500 miles. It's been mostly no A/C, 75% freeway, flat driving. The mileage in my 2003 H2 was 12.5 when I drove it and 11.0 when my wife drove it. I suspect same would be true in the H3, if I let her in it. The difference? She just drives the thing. I become one with the vehicle.

I've done a bit better than that on my road trips and around Phx. Most of the driving is around Phx, one trip to KS, CO, UT and back, one trip to LA. Some of the lower amounts include offroading though that usually only lowers it about 1-2 mpg on a tankful of gas. I've averaged 14.49 mpg over the past 10,000 miles with a range of 11.7 to 19.7. Usually with a/c on I get 14.6-14.9 and add 1 mpg with a/c off. This is with airaid intake, Gibson exhaust, pcm tune and a heavy right foot.

that brings up a a good point when i drive my h3 i get over 17 , my wife gets 16 or less. same in her car, she gets worse milage than i do. I think i unconciously make an effort to drive smooth and save on mpg. It just stems from driving the H# around a lot and trying to maximize mpg.

What size tires are you running? On my 07 H3 I could get close to 20MPG sometimes over that on the interstate doing the speed limit, fairly flat roads between 700' to sea level. That is with stock tires on a non-adventure with automatic. No speeding, I was getting around 360 miles with a 1/4 tank left, fill it up and it was about 18 gallons so I was right at 20 MPG on several occasions. Now I have some sweet looking 34" Super Swampers on it and my mileage is horrible, maybe 14-15 on the highway. No telling what local roads are with stop and go. My point is, your ride looks like it has bigger than stock wheels, if you have big tires forget about decent mileage.

HD - I have 305/55/20's on it. I know it was going to impact the MPG somewhat. So I installed Airaid CAI and a Throttle Body spacer as well. I noticed my city MPG went up a little after installing both engine parts. But I couldn't believe how bad it was. I know that I was in the throttle probably more than I should have been. Driving from Phoenix to Vegas is a up and down hill 2 lane (at parts) road and when you have an opportunity to pass you floor it because you don't know what's coming around the corner. I'm sure it would get better if I wasn't in the gas so much, but you have to be. And now I notice what I've read about shifting between 3rd and 4th being annoying. Seemed like everytime I was going up hill, down shift then 2 seconds later back to 4th. But damn, it still looks and drives great..... pgaduane

My last fill netted 17.2, but the wife did some local errands before heading to work this week. We normally average 18+ with lots of ex'way driving at or below 75mph. Mine has the Adv. Pkg with the oversized tires. I most always keep a light accell foot as there's no real exictement to stomping it.

you calculate the milage until the low fuel light comes on? how much gas is left when low fuel alert comes on?

Man, I just looked at 20"s with 305/55/20 Nitto Grapplers. I was set on this, but 12-14 mpg sounds terrible. I was hoping for at least 15 avg. I guess I must think about how much I want the aggressive look. Anyone had a better experience with this size tire and wheel?

I get 14.7 mpg on the highway in my H2 with 13.5" wide tires, so I'd say you got something wrong

You have a new H3 correct? It takes a while for you to start seeing better mileage. Every single one of us has gone through this. The larger the wheels, the worse the mileage also. Anything over 60 MPH usually drops your mileage big time also Did you have the AC on? That's another one. We have found alot of reasons why collectively on here, so unless you were driving 55 with stock wheels and no AC with over 10k miles on your H3, you probably won't be seeing better mileage for a while

It's not just the tire width but the weight of the wheels and tires. Bigger tires and wheels are heavier, with a larger rotational mass. I hear different discussions on this, and here's one example: for each additional 10 lbs you need 1 hp to make up the performance difference. If each larger wheel/tire combination is 10 lbs heavier than stock, you've gained 40 lbs of rotating weight (and some say every 2lbs. of rotational mass added to the tires/rims is eaqual to 20lbs. of static weight added to the vehicle). More mass, more rotational mass = an engine working harder to do the same thing. Thus the drop in mpg. I picked up the above numbers from various sources but check out this linked article, especially the numbers at the bottom of it. http://www.tirerack.com/wheels-techpage-1/108.shtml Here's a paragraph from that article: A vehicle's total weight is the sum of all of its parts and affects its ability to accelerate, brake and corner. Reducing the total weight will enhance the vehicle's performance because less weight needs to be controlled and therefore, less energy is required. Unsprung weight is the weight under the springs which moves up and down as the vehicle rides over uneven roads and leans in the corners. Reducing unsprung weight allows the springs and shock absorbers to be more effective in controlling the suspension's movement. Additionally, a vehicle's rotational weight includes all parts that spin including everything in the vehicle's driveline from the engine's crankshaft to its wheels and tires. This affects the energy required to change speed as the vehicle accelerates and brakes. As you would guess, reducing the weight of any of these rotating components will enhance the vehicle's performance because less energy will be required to increase or decrease their speed. [conversely, adding weight increases the energy use of course]
