I have had my hummer 3 for just over a year and am considering towing a little with it. Could someone tell me if the've had experience towing with the h3 up to roughly 4800 pounds (camping trailer) even though it is rated at 4500 lbs. Thanks.

The H3 isnt really made for towing and I dont own one but it isnt really good to go over the rating unless you have the proper modifications

not true at all....the h3 does great towing. I tow my 22' bass boat through northern nj mountains and maintain 70+ with no sweat.

I would not tow 4800lbs with a H3.  You have to understand that this is a 5cylinder engine with a rather small transmission.  While you may be able to make the pull it will take a major toll on your ride.  Also trailer weight is also rated as a "dry" weight.  Meaning empty with no gear.  I have been trailering my whole life and I have exceeded my limits in the past and when you do exceed them you will know it.  Your brakes will get hot and smoke you will constantly be switching gears or just running high revs etc.... If you care about your ride do not go over your towing capacity.

I thought the H3 was made to offroad not be trailering boats and other things...Personally I dont think a 5 cylinder engine is very good at towing

your brakes shouldn't even come into question if your running trailer brakes....which you should if running over a 3000 pound trailer. My boat with gear weighs in at around 4600lbs.  Take it out of overdrive and it won't be downshifting at all....I never have it drop out of third when going up hill....not once. I have taken the boat to North Carolina twice and to Florida once to fish tornies and never had a problem...my tranny temp gauge never got close to dangerously hot. Granted the I5 isn't the ideal towing rig...but the torque numbers are close to a small v8 and that's what you need for towing. Plus there is no rear end squat at allwhen you hook the trailer up...my tahoe and even my dually had some rear und squat...the h3 sinks an inch at most...very impressive. If you feel worried, just install a tranny cooler and a tranny temp gauge and you'll have peace of mind.

gorilla....yes the h3 has a stock tow rating of 4500 lbs.

 I am new here and saw this post. I have a Tr21 bass boat and would like to tow it with the H3 every once in a while. I normally tow with the the F150. Do you think this be okay? It would be nice to take the 3 when we go on camping trips. BTW, we just bought the H3 on Sat. and we are loving it.

tr21 is a triton, correct? I tow my 22' Gambler dual console with a worked 250 with no problems at all.

It is a 21'Triton with a 225. It is sitting on a tandem axle with brakes. I may take it to Fork this weekend and see how it does. Love the Gambler. I have fished out of a couple of Gamblers. They are sweet rigs.
