I have a 2003 H2 with around 45K miles on it. During a recent trip, I had trouble getting the vehicle to shift from 1st to 2nd. It also would not go into 4th gear. The dealership tells me that the "2 / 4 Band" is burnt. They recommend replacing the transmission at the cost of $3K! While my regular warranty has expired, I was hoping that it would be covered elsewhere (e.g., 100K mile powertrain warranty, etc.) The dealership says no. Any input would be helpful.

did they tell you this after inspecting it, or over the phone? the same sort of thing happened to me but it was the ignition module.

as for the warranty, they only come with a 36K, 3 year warranty. anything past that would have to have been an extended warranty, purchased through GM or a third party.

bummer. sounds like you'll be getting a new tranny. at least it comes with a 12 month warranty. you may want to enquire about an extended warranty, but i don't know if they sell them once the factory warranty is expired.

Actually, it's a 36 month, 100K mile warranty that they give on new transmissions.

if your temp is running hot on the tranny, you may want to check your coolant.  the '03 radiators have had cases where the wall separating the engine and tranny coolant cracked and mixed coolant with tranny fluid.  your coolant reservoir would look like it has brown pepto bismol in it if this happened.  antifreeze in your tranny fluid is a bad thing.

I have a 2000 suburban, same kind of trouble...Needed new trans... Dealer rebuilt for $2k(12 Mo-12K warranty) or GM Factory for $2900 (5 yr - 50K warranty).. It was a no brainer...

On my H2 I just bought the Extended Warranty....

Ugh .. I think I may be another candidate for this after today .. not sure .. my t-case is acting weird too .. not sure if it's either or both .. trans temp peaked between 180-200 on the way home but dropped down to 150 and kind of fluctuated between the two .. t-case wouldn't go in to 4 hi-locked, tried 4 lo-locked, nothing, tried 4hi locked again and it went in with a loud fricken bang .. dealer time in the morning *sighs*
