Is it true if you use a high wattage one it will fry the connector?

I believe they are all 12v, what you need to worry about is wattage/amperage. That's what will fry your wiring harness.

True HID systems have a ballast boost system and heavy cables from the boost to the light harness.

Try some Sylvania SilverStar Ultras, they're pretty darn good lights for about 50 bucks.
