Well, we'll be in the Allegheny Mountains from the end of November. I understand we can have impressive snow at that time. I currently have 315/75-16 Maxxis Bighorns on the truck and a set of 265/75-16 Winterforce tires ready for the ice in NJ when we get it.

Have any of you used chains and if so, what size tire? I am trying to decide whether to keep the Bighorns on for the trip 9which would probably mean no chains due to their size) or switch to the snow/ice tires and get a set of chains of the really bad stuff (if we get it).

Found some mention of chains in my search, but didn't read of anyone's experiences.

Uhhh...it only snows like a 1/2 a year here, but from what i've read in various magazines, mud tires are really not good in snow at all, if that's what you have on now. I guess it's cuz they self clean? IDK much a/b snow driving.

we get alot of snow here,but i always run bfg all terrains and have never had a problem

This is off subject but man would i love to blow a few doughnuts in a snowy field. Or my neighbors yard.

I bought a set of HD truck chains at Checkers for my 35-75-16's BFG MT's. I have not used them yet but am sure they will definitely not fit on the fronts. The rear should work. (I think the owners manual says not to use chains on the 285 tires.)If not, then I still have the 285 factories though I do not think they will fit on the front either.Having used chains in deep snow with other 4wd's ( Scout, LandCruiser FJ40 and CJ) I learned that chains make an unbelieveable difference. You have to see it to believe it. I have gone up steep inclines, 40 to 45 degrees in about 2 1/2 feet of snow and know there is no way I could that with just my MT's.

chains do work great,but if you dont need em,dont put em on,they really chew up streets that are not covered in snow or ice

Thanks for the advice and experiences. If I used the chains, I would only put them on when I was off-road. That's the tough part - the MT tires I have on are pretty rugged and far tougher for off-road conditions while the Winterforce tires are made of a much softer silicone compound to stick to ice and packed snow better. Problem is, they will probably get chewed up off road.

Maybe I'll take a whole 'nuther set of wheels/tires

- hey I do that for the track.

i saw a set up like that in a 4x4 magazine years ago it was a full size truck with all for traxx like that , and it was suposed to be removable. looked really sweet plowing through the snow

One of the big features of a winter tire is the amount of siping. MT's usually dont come with any. you might look into getting your MT's sipped.
