I am looking at a 1996 Turbo Diesel and wanted to know about the new low sulphur diesel fuels and if they are ok to run on an older engine like this.

If this is a repost please point me to the right post

Thanks

I don't have a lot of experience with turbo diesels in Hummers.... but being a diesel mechanic I do have opinions.

Yes it is an issue.  Perhaps not a major issue in the hummer line but all major diesel manufacturs have had to make improvements for the ULSD and also the newest EPA regs.  The major issue is sulpher helps lube the o-rings.  You can add fuel additives or do like Europe has and change the seals to Viton or simialr plastics..  You also have to check for fuel leaks and monitor the oil.  Fuel filters are said to have to be changed more frequently and also the motor oil.

Like I said I don't have all the answers for your exact question... but damage can occur.

Muddy, can you explain how sulpher lubricates the o-rings? I dont know anything about diesels and I'm just wonering.

poor choice of words....  thanks for asking.... my bad...

Sulphur itself, is not a lubricant. It's the process of removing the sulphur that also removes some of the fuel's lubricity.  The only way to get that back is with additives.... This debate has actually been going on for a couple years... with everyone having different opinions.

I looked into this a few other places and the result is the people that are having issues with the ULSD are seeing puddles under the lift pump.... and in increase in oil level... which equals diluted oil... which equals failure in the bearings.

From a thread on another forum they did a test and best way to add lubrication back into diesel is via biodiesel and just as little as 2% is enough to make up for the slack from the new ULSD fuel.
I happen to run B20 or 20% biodiesel during the warm months with no current mods.

Could you modify the H1 to run on B100 because a guy i saw at the shop had a diesel F-450 running on B100

Yeah, There is actually someone on another forum that has been running B100 on his H1 with no mods at all and had no problem.
The thing with biodiesel is that is eats away at rubber etc. So you can run it with no mods but slowly it will make your rubber items that come in contact with it fail for example lines, orings etc.
So yeah you can run B100 on a unmodded H1 just i wouldnt go directly to B100 id start on a lower percentage eg. B20 then slowly move up since it will clean out your fuel system and tank and will clog up your fuel filters so if you gradually goto B100 and keep extra fuel filters wont have a problem and it is the way that I will be going and just replace the rubber with viton as they fail so the cost will be spread out and will get the full life out of my current rubber items before replacing.

Running an H1 on B100 wouldnt be a bad idea. BTW does the B100 have to be homemade or can you buy it?

I have been running Biodiesel in my H1 for years, as little as 2% and as much as 100% at different times:

BIODIESEL in a Hummer H1

As far as other additives go (besides running biodiesel), I would recommend Stanadyne's "Performance" additive; it is recommended by AM General (Stanadyne makes the injection pump and much of the rest of the fuel delivery systems in the H1), and it is also good for lowering the gel point of the fuel for those of you in colder climates, in addition to improving cetane rating and overall lubricity.

The biodiesel stuff works better than regular diesel because my neighbor has a cummins turbodiesel and switched to biodiesel and got an additional 20hp and 30lb ft of torque
