Is 9.5 mpg normal for a 2003 h2 Any ideas on how to improve?

not that great....  no

I get 11.7....now.... up from 11.5 this summer....

but then again you said it's only got 12,000 miles.... so drive it a little and see if that average goes up...  or set the cruise for 65 and see what the instant reading is....

If you want to improve fuel mileage you can get the superchip(or PCMforless) for the h2 and it should give you a 2mpg increase. Free up the engine withan intake and a new muffler and you should be getting around 13 to 14 mpg or higher.

I would be horrified.  I averaged 15.3 on my stock 03 last night to work and back.  60 miles round trip combination of 55 hwy and back roads.  Overall in the 10k miles I've driven it, I've averaged around 13.5 and about 25% of the time I'm pulling a 5x8 enclosed trailer.  I will say this.....I found I get about 2 mpg more using BP fuel.   Good Luck

the magnets are awesome.  i put them on my frame on either side of my transfer case and went from 8.35 to 8.351 mpg overnight.  the magnetic field generated by having them on opposite sides of the transfer case creates an air buffer that eliminates drag from the transfer case skidplate, allowing you to almost hydroplane on pavement.  it's awesome, i'm so glad bob let me borrow them . . . . . . . .

I also have noticed that I get better gas mileage when I am going downhill.....  dunno why.... and no one seems to be able to explain it.... but I have seen 60mpg or better...
