Stripped Skidplate bolt holes - fix needed - 9/15/2007 12:51:40 PM

Exhaust shop stripped out the holes my bolts go into for the skidplate. WHo has faced this and what is the remedy to fix?

shouldn't be too hard to just use a tap and die set to chase the threads again.....

the dealer has stripped mine, twice.  the only option is to drill a slightly larger hole and tap it.  i'd recommend a coarse thread, less work to get it started.  you may need to widen the hole in the skid plate as well if it's been twisted at all, that makes it easier to get the bolt started.  I'm up to a 1/2 inch coarse thread on the rear bolts, and they've already managed to strip one of those.  the steel of the frame is soft and thin, there's not a lot to bite into, which makes it easier to strip, but also easier to redo.

I ended up tapping the holes out and using Time Serts so the stock size bolts would fit. Installed Time Serts with deeper thread depth so the bolts have more to bite on to and installed them with Red Loctite so they won't spin in-out.
