I tried to look it up but it seems that no one can agree on what it exactly means. I think that 4wd and awd are just two phrases to which every car manufacturer can give its own definition to.

I believe specifically that four wheel dive has a tranfer case with a locking high range for eqaul torque slit front and rear, and low range. All Wheel Drive only has high range with no center lock. At least these are the definitions I use and have read in automotive magazines and journals.
