OK…

So I finally got around to having my windshield replaced today and thought I’d share some cheesy photos of the process……..

Popped off the breather covers:

Removed the door moldings and screws from the side reveals:

Notice all the black goop the dealer puts in to correct that pesky wind noise issue:

Wipers come off then the top cowl. Note: that special tool is all that stands between the installer and a broken cowl. 3 bills or so I believe.

Now the sub cowl comes off:

Removal time:

Slap some goo on it and reverse the process.

I learned a few things from the guys that did the replacement. They do a ton of these a month.

Use only folks that have done HUMMERS before. There are tricks to the job not everyone knows.

Example, if they don't have that tool for removing the top cowl, it's a 50/50 shot they will break it.

These guys make special rubber spacers to position and cushion the glass from possible metal contact in rough terrain.

If you have roof lights they charge $100 extra. Seems there is an issue with the riv-nuts having to be drilled out.

If you get a chip or small crack, get it repaired BEFORE it gets as bad as mine did. As a general rule, if you can cover
the damage with a dollar bill, they can do a repair. The site will be a little distorted, but it stops the damage from spreading
and is a hell of a lot cheaper. You can do multiple repairs if necessary.

Cure time is 3 hours prior to driving, 72 for a permanent cure.

During the cure times, leave a window cracked to shut a door and close them for highway driving...The pressure will F it up.

I know this is a huge post, but I found the whole process very interesting and figured if just one of you do as well, then it was worth it.

Nice info Gunner, hope this windscreen lasts longer than your first. I've got 3 tiny chips in mine, gotta get off my arse and get them filled. My Allstate insurance rep said it's no charge for repairs and $250 deductible for replacement.

I really think your post will save some H3 owner some future headaches by knowing to ask the question if they've ever done an H3 before.. I know I will if I ever have to replace mine.

Hope to meet you one day soon, I'm on the road again, last week was in KC, this week I'm in Nashville. Go to Racetrac and fill that puppy up now that you got the glass replaced, when I left Monday morning it was $2.67 a gallon there on Collins and I-20.

cool pics and i always wondered about those breather pieces, do they come off easy?

also i had my ram25004x4 windscreen replaced and safelite did my repairs and state farm covered 100%, but they put some aftermarket glass in it and the black out areas on the glass didnt match my OEM glass and you could see under the top of my dash and other parts of the cowel..hated it...BUT the good thing was while waiting 3 hrs for the cure time the glass split in 3 places across the height of glass..lol... so after a call and 2 days later i got OEM glass with correct blackouts.

That is rediculous how much work is involved.  Leave it to GM to design something like this.  And, why did I say I'm going to buy American from now on?

So far, so good....No water leaks and no wind noise......$350 for the repair.

ghettoct: The fake breather covers are a snap (pun intended) to remove. Pop open your hood and pull straight up.
Just be careful not to scratch anything.

I've played with the idea of hiding lighting relays in there or even some LED down lighting.....

HUMMER DRIVER: You back in town yet? The Fly-By-Night gas station on South Cooper had  regular for $2.62.
We'll have to do lunch at Betto's or something one day....

I drive on Texas highways.......I-35/67, I-45 and I-20 to be specific.

You can't throw a dead cat without hitting some damn rock hauler n any of these roads.

Guess I'd rather have the glass breakage than paint/body damage...............

I used to cruise up and down the 20 and I-35 all the time. I miss those days.
