H2 and GM truck owners prepare for 2010

General Motors will build a new range of diesel engines at a plant in western New York beginning in 2009.

The new 4.5-liter diesel, which will wear the Duramax label, will deliver class-leading torque, power and refinement, the company says. In terms of environmental benefits, GM says the turbodiesel will boost efficiency by 25 percent while cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 13 percent and nitrogen oxide emissions by at least 90 percent.

In terms of dimensions, the new engine will fit in the same space as GM's small-block gasoline V-8. Integrating the cylinder head exhaust manifolds, cam cover intake manifolds, and narrowing the block made the sizing possible, GM said in a release.

The engine will produce more than 310 horsepower and 520 pound-feet of torque, along with class-leading refinement, the company adds.

The new engine is slated for use in light-duty trucks and the HUMMER H2. It will be compliant with the tougher 2010 diesel emission standards and will meet diesel regulations in all 50 states

Ok, while this isn't the complete story, it is a reasonable way to think about it.
Horsepower limits your top speed while torque limits how fast you get there.  Considering we are discussing 6700 pound vehicles that are not routinely run at Le Mans, what is most relevant is torque.

The 6.0 gas engine produces about 350 ft/lb torque if I remember correctly, while this diesel will make 520 ft/lb.  Thus, the diesel is about 40% more "powerful" where it counts.  While I own one anyway, as of last week, it is silly that these trucks weren't sold with turbo diesels from the beginning considering their weight.  While significantly cheaper, gasoline engines stop making sense in many ways when GVW exceed about 5K lb, in my opinion.  They simply cannot produce enough torque at a low enough RPM to move the weight off the line, especially with an automatic transmission.

It was explained to me like this when I was 10....

Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall, Torque is how hard you hitl....

Diesels are the best.... they will run underwater for hours, they run cooler, more power, more durable, the list is endless.  (I'm not biased bescause I am a diesel mechanic either)

Sound is subjective, to each his or her own.
0-60 is objective.

My point is that only you can answer what you like.

Bob, Bob, Bob........................ You call yourself a Bling Master and you don't even know how torque is measured?  WOW, I say.... WOWEEE WOW WOW WOW WOW.

If anything, it will make the H2 sound more like a REAL rig.  I think that's pretty damn awsome.  A smaller engine, more torque, better mileage, less emissions then some of the larger SUV's out there, that's pretty damn cool.  Too bad I'll have to wait 5 years to get a used one I can afford (That means I'll be about 40 until I can get one) and you know what, I'll STILL be here and have about 56,345 posts by that time, all about the same thing, Magnets!!! Let's get real here.  Unless they have a Magnet option, who the hell would buy it..................

Hey Paul Teutle.  I was just trying to figure out a way to make fun of you for being the only man with a Hummer that has no idea how an engine works past the gas pedal
