Heat the intake air

Excellent, the smooth intake pipe and bend increases flow (I really wonder how much, but it has to go up), but does conductive and convection heat to the charge negate that flow increase???? Please e mail K&N and let them know you've been waiting too long for an ' 07 application. I did, maybe we can get the squeeky treatment?

ikao - Well, I just installed it a 500 miles, and only have 682 miles on it today. So, I can not tell you anything about MPG inprovement, but it seems to improve the performance. But, I installed both the GM Performance intake system and the Magnaflow Cat back system about the same time.
About the heat, remember the system pulls the air from the inside of the right fender behind the headlamp assy. Cover may be warn, but the under hood temp is high, and you are removing the big plastic box on top of the manifold, which has a lots of heat. So, the trade off is that the system pushes the cool air into the engine, that the plastic box.

Ok, if your looks to only improve you MPG, the intake system is not the way to go, because at over $350+ (Magnaflow $560+) it would take you a long time for pay back. I my case, just wanted the cool looking system when I open the hood, and like the twin outlets on the exhaust.

it wouldn't take me that long to get back the money, since I commute 100 miles a day :D ;(
I do plan on changing the exhaust too, though. I'm still looking through all the threads in here to see which one I might want.

as for the intake, I was under the impression that the heat from the engine would conduct its way to the tube? was just wondering if that would heat it up to any extent. you're probably right, though; I may be better off just waiting for the K&N.

Remember, aluminum dissipate the heat faster than plastic.

that's an interesting thing I hadn't thought about, actually. I was thinking about the aluminum conducting more heat from the engine, sending more heat towards the intake. now that you mention that, the AL does wick away from heat from the engine, but also lets air passing under the hood make it act as somewhat of a heatsink; whereas a plastic tube would let the all the heat sit in the engine, wouldn't it? I guess it all works out.

edit: maybe I will buy the GM intake. it's only $3.5, after all.

well, I decided to go for it. bought the gm intake, touring exhaust, and a pcm tune. never installed an intake or exhaust before (and pretty sure I don't have the proper tools either), so I may have the dealer install those things while I watch how it's done.

ikao, please keep us posted on your install. I am looking at the GM intake and either the GM performance exhaust or the touring exhaust. I would love to get your feedback on performance, sound and gas milage once you're done. Also, where did you get your pcm tune?

Anyone know the difference between the touring and the performance exhaust..other than the substancial cost difference?

lynch hummer (from whom I ordered) told me the only difference is the sound. the touring is quieter than the performance. since I'm just looking for performance increase without too much sound, the touring exhaust seems to be more what I want.

hafnutz67, I will definitely post an update when I get them installed :). also, I got the pcm tune from pcmforless.com. kelly was very helpful and patient with answering all my questions. they're running a special right now; their prices are great, imo.

Psycho; do you have the 3.5L or 3.7L? Your spark plug connectors are way different then mine, and I have the '06 3.5L. Where as you have these black blocks on yours, I have metal covers with silver heat sinks on each one. That's very interesting.

Another thing you guys are saying doesn't make much sense. Yes, aluminum doesn't keep heat as long, but you are forgetting that the entire engine compartment is filled with this heat ALL the time, so the dissapation of heat would only matter if the engine compartment was cool after the the pipe heated up, which it never is really. It's constantly surrounded by the engine heat, so wouldn't that make it hot ALL the time? I'm just wondering. I would think plastic would be a better heat insulator all the time. You can always wrap the intake hose also with engine heat insulation. I did that on a couple of my cars and it insulates the hose from the engine heat, and keeps it cooler.

That doesn't include S&H either. The friggin' tips are $160 for the two!!!

I can't see the price for the GM Intake. I just bought a K&N performance filter. Basically that's what GM does plus some chrome glitz. Filter is $50.

the GM intake is $344. I have to admit, I don't see what it really does beside making the tube straight and removing the.......resonator, is it? oh ya, and make everything nice and shiny.

ya, I forgot the price of the tips too. all in all.... ya, rather expensive.

oy, HummerGuy, that gives me a lot to think about. I'm thinking about wiring up a few thermocouples underneath the hood just to check the thermal distribution in there while driving.
