Hey guys, I've been getting terrible gas mileage on my first two tanks on my H3. My first tank I got around 11-12 and this tank I got around 10-11. Is this normal, or is it because the car isn't broken in yet? I've been doing normal speeds with slight acceleration, staying around 65-70mph. A lot of it has also been highway driving around 25-30 miles at a clip. Let me know your guys take on this.

Thank you again!

Oh the reason I say this, is because the salesman told me his son has the same truck and he gets over 20mpg driving on the highway.

Oh and yes I read http://www.hummerforums.com/m_47096/tm.htm , I just wanted to hear people's personal opinions about my scenario.

my first few tanks i also got crappy mileage, between 10 and 13. now i have 4500 miles on it and i can get 20 on the highway and averaging 16-17 with city and highway combined. just give it time to break in.

I have 3,350  on my H3 and I have averaged over the past 4 fill ups of 14.3 mpg mostly city driving and 17.3 highway.

My H3 didn't break in until about 4000 miles. It suddenly zoomed from 15-16 mpg on the highway to 18-19. Give it some time.

My new (just over 1 month) H3 has gotten 15.51 and 14.54 MPG on the first two tanks.  I still have less than 600 miles on my vehicle.  First tank was a little more highway (almost 100 miles driving home from the dealer) and the second tank was more local driving.  Kept it at 55 or under until I broke 500 miles (I know-I didn't "drive it like I stole it". )

Did anyone notice any MPG increases after a tune, CAI or improved exhaust?(duals)

It's going to take a bit for your engine to adjust so getting bad mileage at the beginning is normal.  You aren't supposed to be driving on the highway during the break-in period so that could have alot to do with it.

I get better mileage after I has PCMforLess tune my PCM.  Anything over 65 and your mileage will start to suffer normally with most people on here at least.  I wouldn't worry about it until you put a few thousand miles on it.  If it still suffers, then you need to get it checked out.

Thanks guys. I was just astonished to see only 250 miles in one 23 gallon tank. I just refillled and I'm going to try to drive more aware of my acceleration and what not to see if its me thats sucking the gas out of my truck . Anyway, I'll let you guys know the results. Thanks again. And Also HummerGuy what type of difference in gas mileage did you get with the PCMforLess tune? I was looking into that

Well, it took me a while to figure out why it varied so much, but I THINK I figured it out.

One of the promises of the PCM tune is more acceleration for passing, etc.  I have a feeling at the higher speeds/rpms the engine takes more gas to feed itself at a higher gas to air ratio.  Basically, when going under 65 (which seems to be the breaking point) I would estimate I am getting 1 to 3 MPG more then I did before the tune.  I do have a 5-speed but when measuring the MPGs I tried to keep everything constant, like shifting at the same RPMs, driving the same speeds on the highway, etc.  Whenever I drive over 65-70 Mph, the mileage seems to start taking a bigger hit, more so then it did without the PCM tune.  I'm not sure if that's because of the PCM or just normal wear and tear of the engine.  Most likely it's the point where what little aerodynamics the H3 has just goes to hell and you start feeling like you are pushing an invisible wall of air (which technically, I guess you are!)  I will say it did take about 1k to 2k for me to notice the extra torque, although again, it's not as noticable on a 5-speed as it is on an Automatic.  Overall, you'll get better mileage with the PCM tune, but it's not going to be anything dramatic.  Over time though, you will definitely save some bucks, just not an astronomical amount.  It all depends on your driving environment and habits.  The extra power is awsome though.  The more you drive it, the more it will increase, until the point where you say to yourself "Wow, this thing is really quick now."  I would advise getting some sort of new air intake before doing the PCM upgrade, either a simple K&N replacement filter as I have, or one of the cold air intake systems.  They are fairly easy to install, even for someone that isn't very knowledgeable about working on cars, but will give the PCM tune that extra kick it needs.

Somehow I doubt that!  Why don't you educate me on how you calculated your fuel mileage.  The best MPGs I've gotten since owning my H3 is 16.8 and that's doing around 65-70 mph all freeway driving.

Damn Dawg...Ain't you gelin?

Here is a little pit fall that hopeful drivers do to themselfs...

You fill up at the gas pump..and you squeeze every last drop you can in until it is tip-top full, right up to the cap....Then you drive around for a week and fill up again, but this time you fill it up until the noozle kicks off and you hook it back up...You used less gas on the this fill compared to the last fill (Miles driven divided by the gallons used to fill, asuming you used your trip odo) which you topped off tip-top full...I did this once and I was averaging 22 MPG

And yes, you too Dawg can be edumacated, if you would only stay at a Holiday Inn Express once in a while
