That wouldn't be accurate.  If you fill it up to the cap and reset your trip odometer and then you fill it up a second time until the nozzle cuts off then you are putting less gas in the second time.  When you divide the number of miles you got off of the full tank by the number of gallons you filled up with the second time when the nozzle klicked off then of course your going to get better mpgs because it's not an accurate count.  In order for it to be accurate you would have to fill it up to the very top the second time and then use the number of gallons you put into the tank divided into the total miles driven.

By george I think you've got it!

And that's what people are doing to fool themselves into thinking they are getting this great mileage.

Yeah, I put the beer down and realized your point.  I just think it's funny that people claim they get 20 mpg or more when the new EPA estimates rate the H3 at 14 city and 18 highway.  I find it especially funny that someone would claim to be doing 95 mph and get 20 mpg and actually expect people to believe that nonsense.  I think somebody needs a new calculater.

I am glad that you brought this up.  I have had my H3 for about 2 weeks and I am sort of in shock.  I was driving an SUV before that got about 18mpg so I was thinking that I would not be too far off from that number.  I drive mostly city, but some highway to and from work.  The gas is flying out of the tank and I feel like I am loosing half a tank just going to the store....ha,ha....I have filled up twice and I bought it with a full tank so I am getting a little scared.  I normally fill up once a week (with a smaller tank).  I am hoping for the same thing as you.....just need to get it broken in!

BTW.....to all....Thank you for sending me to Clarence at G-Style.  I ordered the roof rack and the tire cover and he was so friendly and helpful!!  Not to mention good prices!

On a Trip last week from Central Ohio to Savannah GA and 2000 miles on my H3 I got 16.1 mpg.  I plan to add a tune, CAI and exhaust in the near future and I'm hoping for improved mileage.  Anybody do these 3 mods and can share your results?

There are so many factors in judging mileage.  Topping off is one of them, but also if you are on a level surface.  You know how many gas stations there are out there where you truck is leaning or what not? That affects how much gas you can push in that tank also.  My rule if I want to judge mileage is use the SAME pump for a few weeks, and once the handle stops, take it out.  That way you know you are most likely getting the exact same amount of fuel in there every time.  If you go to different stations that isn't going to work.  You don't know what the threshold for the pump cut-off is at different stations, plust if your parked at an angle, there is going to be some air in the tank.  I just think unless you have a digital system like the Cadi's have, you are never REALLY going to know and the best bet would be use the same pump all the time.  Just my opinion.........

For what it's worth...an old trick was to bump the car with your butt several times to work out the any air bubbles in the tank.

So, what you are saying is your Hummer is running on natural gas?

Do you folks think that topping off makes that big a difference? Maybe if the pump is stopping prematurely I would say yes, but if you top it off manually just short of it spilling back out of the filler cap I don't think it makes much difference. A simple example: say you go 300 miles and fill up with 18 gallons when the pump stops = 16.67 mpg. If you were to keep pumping until it spilled out, how much more gas is it likely to be? 1/2 gallon at most? Then 300 miles / 18.5 gallons 16.22 mpg, not much differnce IMO.

Has anyone ever tried one of these: http://www.scangauge.com/
http://www.scangauge.com/products/sg2photos/images/IMG_1999_Amber.jpg>

Maybe real-time monitoring of driving habits (amount of throttle and relation to instantaneous mpg, shift points for manual trans, relation of highway cruising to instantaneous mpg, etc.) would give some guidance on all our theories?

I'm thinking about getting one, they're on eBay for about $160 or so.

I actually started a post about this device and a few members here purchased it.  I would love to get it but I have too many gadgets the way it is. Dennis has even threatened to beat me if I don't stop
