12V sockets - 6/14/2007 1:01:58 PM

Tried the search button, but no luck.  Here’s my question…are the 12V sockets “hot” or “live” all the time?  I though they would shut off with the key out of the ignition?  Wanted to leave the iPod FM transmitter and GPS plugged in all the time.  However, I notice they do not shut off when the key is removed.  In the old ride, power to the sockets turned off with when the key was removed.  Any thoughts on this are appreciated.  Thanks.

Are there cord adapters for the 12v sockets?  Like an extension cord.

I have one from Radio Shack.  Looks to be about 3 ft.  It is cord and stretches from eithe r the front to the back seats or from the back socket to the back seets.  Allows for the kids to plug into it for power.  They also has multiple socket ones available.

I bought a SPST relay that is rated for 20A and I am trying the coil of that relay to the ignition and breaking the 12v sockets. So when the ignition is on the socket is hot. When the ignition is off, the socket is not.....
Not to tough to do.

I was looking into the same thing.  My AC phone charger for my wifes phone stoped working.  She was using the car charger.  I think I found the front ones turns off after a while but the one in the back is always hot.  But don't hold me to it.

I found that the front sockets are on all of the time. The same with the back socket. The wiring diagram shows it going directly to the bat fuse.

Does the H3 have an energy management program?  I had it on the CTS.  My radar detector was always on.  But later the energy management software turned it off to save the battery.

I don't think so... The wiring diagram shows it wired directly to the battery fuse panel. My other vehicles had the sockets turning off as soon as the key was off. That was nice.
I did leave my radar detector on for over a week and a half (at the airport parking lot) and when I got back from the trip I found a dead battery! Not a happy puppy!
This is why I'm adding a relay to break the voltage to the socket when the key is off. I wish that would be a change in future H3's.

Crank,
How about giving us the details with some pics on how to do that?
