I've been in the field for 10+ years, and I always recommend Dell to all of my attorney's and co-workers.  I have personally built too many PC's to count and have purchased my last 3 PCs from Dell with absolutely no hardware problems.   I don't like HP too much because I have worked on a few home HP computers that seem to have hardware problems frequently (but that could just be a coincidence).  I will always buy Dell because they are easy to configure and have a very good price point and configuration options.

Being in the computer business for 17+ years, and specializing in custom built machines, I'd have to go along with the other members here.  If you are capable of it, ordering your own parts and assembling yourself will still get you the most bang for your buck, but as for buying from someone, if I had to choose, Dell would be my first choice as well.  Just make sure you buy one of their higher end ones, as the entry level models have several shortcomings.  Look at the ones using the Intel Core 2 duo, and don't skimp on the RAM.

If you're mainly gaming, then go Alienware with a G15 keyboard and a G7 mouse from Logitech. If for home/office/maybe some gaming, then I too agree about hp, as I've had a few which have had to have their integrated sound cards/hard drives replaced too many times...under warranty thank goodness. My best friend used to be an engineer/programmer for Dell, and he swears by them. Since he never came through on the 'Dell deal' that he was supposed to get me, I now currently have a high-end Sony desktop with a Gateway 24" LCD monitor, as well as a Compaq laptop which I've used for 'on the job' reports. The laptop I've had for about six years now and the desktop for almost three years, and I haven't experienced any problems with these to date. BTW, the Compaq was purchased pre-hp/Compaq merger...heh...heh. I'd go with what the 'guys in the know' (above) have recommended, as they all pretty well much agree on Dell...good luck.

Update: Oops, looks like you already made the 'wise' decision.
