Windshield Chips

soonerta -> Windshield Chips (6/1/2007 4:47:02 PM)

I have had two chips in the last 3 weeks.  With only 5000 miles on mine it does not seem to be a good percentage.  I believe it is because the windshield is so straight.  Has anyone else encountered this?  We have a lot of trucks on our roads and may be unavoidable.  Just curious?

It took me less than 24 hours to get my first chip. Vertical windshields will generally get more chips and cracks than angled windshields. Check out all the delivery vans/trucks when you drive around and you'll notice lots of cracked windshields.

It took me three weeks to get my second chip.

I guess it is the price of having such a cool vehicle.

With so many semi's on the road now it's no small wonder we don't all have them.  Glass chips are easily repaired by a glass repair shop. Check with your insurance company first, they will usually waive the comprehensive deductible to repair a windshield versus replacing it (each is different though).

 You're Lucky!  I got my first TWO chips in under 500 Miles! [;)]

Seriously though, I believe as well that the straight up profile of the windshield might contribute to this conundrum.

Yep! A few chips in just the first 1000 miles.  Have you noticed the amount of buggage?

HEY HEY NOW, BE NICE..SOME OF US USE TO/STILL DO DRIVE SEMI'S..[:D][:D]

Hi Tina, no slam against semi's at all I love the Peterbilt.  It's just in Texas the rock haulers and others are bad about not covering their loads.  I avoid them as much as I can, had two windshields replaced before on other vehicles.

Do you guys think those hood bug deflectors would help some?  It redirects the air away from the windshield.

Amen to that......I travel I20, I45 and US67 extensively, So I feel your pain darlin.

I still haven't ponied up the $$ to get mine replaced (large crack instead of a chip).

"Do you guys think those hood bug deflectors would help some?  It redirects the air away from the windshield"

Anyone installed a deflector?

Gunner_45 -> RE: Windshield Chips (6/5/2007 6:42:21 AM)

Have you found one that looks right on an H3?

I've not been able to find any pics of one actually installed (but then I haven't really looked)

My SMA grill guard takes most of the hits and deflects the majority of the rocks over the top, but a few do/have made contact.

Guess that's just the price one pays for driving something with the aerodynamics of a brick---[;)]

Fireman -> RE: Windshield Chips (6/5/2007 7:15:39 AM)

We've been lucky so far. As of yet we don't have any chips on the windshield, after almost one year. But, at any given time, there are more bugs than you'll find in a rain forest.. splattered all over it. [&:] We need to replace our wipers with bug scrapers.

Gunner_45 -> RE: Windshield Chips (6/5/2007 7:29:24 AM)

Oh hell.......................

Here we go..........................

"Bug Splat of the Month"

Think we ought to start a thread?

Photo submissions could be judged on circumference of the splat, gut saturation/opacity and color...

1 to 10 points for each criteria, with 5 bonus points added for stuck on remains/parts/carcasses.

(That's sick enough to almost be funny....At least in my warped little mind)
