I look at it like this, the 3 guys paid $10 each for a total of $30. The real price should have bee $25, which would have been roughly $8.33, a difference of $1.67. The motel realises the mistake and give $5 to the bell hop to return to the guests. He pockets $2, returning only $1 to each of the men. His $2 equal the $0.67 owed to each of the guests if you add it up. 10*3=30, 25/3=roughly 8.33, 5/3= roughly 1.67, 10-8.33=1.67.
Simple enough?
