I eventually want to do a simular thing once i get the $$$ as for a big block im guessing your going with a gasser... which is fine as long as you dont plan on going too deep without waterproofing the distributor cap etc... as for duramax be a great block to drop in but honestly I think it would be too much $$$ for little offroading and beach house... id suggest just rebuilding the 6.2 or drop in the 6.5L..
As for doing one up I am planning to either get a J Austin 6" Suspension lift or a 3.5" Rubber Duck body lift... then putting some nice meats on it and then going to linex/rhinoline the whole interior and some nice neoprene seats and get a nice custom roll cage put on it... prolly use tubular doors and keep the softtop or make a custom top for the new rollcage... and I would like to try to keep the 24v system in it to keep the sealed electronics etc... with a setup like this be perfect for offroading or beach cruiser... dont need to worry about dirtying up the interior because you can just hose it out which you could do with a civilian hummer too but not as well since the seats and carpet in them... plus by doing it like this will have convertible option which is ALWAYS nice on the beach.
