So last night while on my truck search we made a drive through NJ into PA and then back to soutehr NJ then home. Total of 370 miles or so. I filled up on teh turnpike, set my trip odometer to zero and set my cruise at 65 mph....set it much lower than normal just to see how much better my mileage would be. I was going to be on the pike for over 200 miles so I figured it would be a good true highway test at mileage......here is how many miles I went. Filled up again and got 21.7 gallons.... you do the math

Dude what the hell speeds do you drive normally like 90?  No wonder you get sucky gas mileage.  I get around 20 to 23mpg after the PCM tune if I keep it under 70.  If I go 75 or above for a tank I'm lucky if I pull off 15mpg on the highway

How in the heck....I reset my trip odometer everytime I tank up.  I usually get between 300 and 330 miles using roughly 18.5 - 20 gallons of gas.  My MPGs are always higher if I drive on the interstate and I usually go around 65 to 70 mph using my cruise control.  I haven't upgraded my pcm yet.

Dude, ImportKiller has been struggling with this since he bought his H3.  He was averaging about 9 MPG before lol. I think we now know why

I believe he also starting pulling a boat like 5 miles after he bought the thing.  Someone needs to stop his madness!

Mike, what the hell speed do you think I posted? I said I had cruise set to 65mph.....and still got 192 miles for the entire tank....now correct me if I am wrong but 65 is lower than the 70 you said you go...correct? Your confusing the hell out of me

Since ours was new in Nov. we have never gotten better than 13 mpg.  I don't know what you are doing to get 20+.   I wonder why there is such a difference?  I have been very unhappy with this since I have gotten the H3.  If I would have known this I would have gotten the H2.  I wonder if elevation would have anything to do with it, but it is fuel injected so really that should have no effect.

BTW....192 miles / 21.7 gallons of fuel = 8.8 MPG...while traveling 65 mph straight thru on the turnpike with no stops.

Well mike's mileage is good cause he drives like a fairy....see he has no brakes most of the time, his clutch is slipping, his front diff implodes when he makes a sharp turn and his transfer case is making his truck jerk like it's on hydraulics....so most his highway miles are probably at 35 mph in 5th gear with the windows down so he can listen for any othe mystery noises

and oh yea...he has a manual...thats good for 2-3 mpg.

You need to have the dealership do a compression leak down test of all 5 cylinders.  It sounds like you have some internal engine problems.  How is the power?  Does it run rough?  You may have low compression on all of the cylinders causing blow by.  If that is the case, the engine would be running very inefficiently.

my compression is fine, checked that already. truck runs great and is actually faster than my buddies identical 06 h3. I pull him from the line and in 1/4 mile strip I beat him by at least 5 lenghts every time. I know the problem is in my PCM tune, somehow someway a tech at the dealership had to be playing with it....but they keep telling me that it because I'm running 35's, even though I was getting 11 mpg with the stock base 265's. Last dealership told me they can't reflash the pcm to stock....technology isn't available yet for the h3....I didn't tell him I was a gm tech...just laughed in his face. I'm going to send it out to pcmforless.com and have tehm look at it and correct. Pretty sad that a I5 is getting worse mileage than a worked 350 SB would get.

I am thinking that something in the cooling system culd be bad, causing the truck to run constant coolant so the motor runs like it is always cold...which burns more fuel. Kinda like having the choke open all the time on a carb motor.

Hey JB.  I got my PCM reprogrammed from PCMforLess, I have a 5-speed stick, and 90% of my driving is highway driving.  In IDEAL conditions, 60+ degree weather, no AC, I can pull off 21 to 23 at the most, assuming there is no wind either lol.  On these 0 degree days, I'm lucky to get 17 or 18, still good, but it all depends on the weather pretty much.

I'm actualy thinking about removing my big clunker light bar.  That will definitely increase my mileage.
