H2 Frame.

I was talking to a GM Service tech manager yesterday when we started talking abot my H2. Well I brought up how lots of people say how the H2 is a pretty ttruck sitting on a tahoe frame. Well he assured me that is deffinetly not the case. The H2 frame is the same frame they use on thier 2500 HD trucks, Which is thier Heavy Duty commercial truck line. He told that frame is pretty much indestructable!!
Some of you may have already known that but I just wanted to pass it along.
I know that on some of the web sites i frequent they always down play the Hummer with the Tahoe or yukon frame thing!

The H3 is on the same frame as the Colorado.

Hey, intercooled, thanks for dispelling that myth, which, unfortunately, I was led to believe. I'm glad that really is not the case (if what they told you is true). Maybe someone here can do a little research and post it here. Cause those people at FUH2 really bang that to your head saying "It's a tahoe disguised as a hummer"! '[:\'(]'))

Yeah the guy is my neighbor and we had a chat about the H2. Hes a smart guy and would like to believe that he has his facts straight. I here the Tahoe thing alot too!!

i saw a post on another forum that talked about the frame and how it's actually a mix from different chebby heavy duty vehicles. i'll see if i can find it and "borrow" it to post up. i really don't care where it comes from, just as long as it keeps me goin'. i do know one thing, boulders have a tendency to eat through the rust protection coating and leave shiny steel behind, but don't leave dents in the frame. even if you drop from about 12 inches thinking your foot is on the brake but is actually on the gas . . .[8D]

this h3 was following me, notice the "clean" spot next to the front tire.

i found this on another forum, it's from 2001, but gives an idea of what GM used, at least initially, for the frame of the H2. also a little blurb about the fake intake humps in front of the windshield.

"They have taken frame and suspension components from the Tahoe and Suburban (using existing parts and components keeps the price down), but they've put them together in a unique manner to produce an entire new frame and suspension system. The frame is welded together to give it strength and stiffness (the H1 frame is bolted together). It's also been chopped off to achieve better approach and departure angles"

"For example, there are "humps" on either side above the hood and in front of the windshield. They imitate the air intake on an H1, but are non-functional."

Thats interesting. The key words here for those Hummer haters are Taho and Suburban Components. Not the same frame.[:)]

In reference to using existing frame components to keep the cost down. From what existing frame did the people that came out with the Yugo or Kia use to keep the cost down. When those people started a new car company they probably started from scratch and yet the prices where low. The H2 already has a high price as it its. According to AM General, the H1 costs double than the H2 because supposedly it has all steel components, no plastic, polyurethane or whatever they now replace steel with. How high can the price get from a one time investment in tooling and engineering. But I guess that's GM for you. On top of that, my barebones h2 had an MSRP of $52,000 while my sister-in-law's $34,000 Mitsubishi comes loaded with navigation, dvd/tv on ceiling, roof racks already installed, and a whole lot of other goodies that i've had to add to my H2.

i think the yugo frame came from a chinese handcart, but the engineering costs to add windshield wipers drove the cost above $100,therefore the high retail cost. kia is based on the same thing, but from a non-communist infrastructure, and rubber isn't subsidized so that made them even more expensive. hey, let 'em rag about my "tahoe", i earned it so i'll drive whatever i want. if they don't like it, they shouldn't have chained themselves to the sapling i ran over . . . the thing is, GM took parts that they already had, maximized their utility, and came up with something we all seem to enjoy. nothing we can do to change people's minds about our vehicles, it seems to be a love/hate issue these days. frankly, i'm a tad proud that i can sit at the gas pump while 3 other cars fill up and go, i earned that priviledge from bustin' my hump all these years (ok, i don't really have a hump, but it seemed to fit the clean atmosphere we keep on this forum).

ok, off my soapbox now, back to normal.[8D] gotta find that picture of me with the helmet on . .. . .

I have been told by several people who works for GM that the H2 frame is a knock off of the 2500 (3/4 ton) Suburban frame but is actually stronger because the joints are welded on the H2 frame insteaded of bolted together like what is done on the Suburban frame

I also heard these rumors... I think that the 2500hd frame would please me more than the tahoe..
regardless i dont know what it really matters, ive never heard of someone having frame problems.

Please take the time to read the link  DJGUY988 left.  It really explains the whole chassis, the middle is pure H2 the front is 2500 comp and the rear is partial 1500 it is a truly comprehensive description of the H2.. nice fin DJ

Thanks Big Guy.....amazing what you can find when you can't sleep in the airport cuz you're picking up your new H2 in a matter of hours.  No sleep and a 14 hour drive home to follow.......it would have taken a tire iron to get the smile off my face.
