Man after reading what happened to you IK I haven't been able to stop thinking about it.  It seriously struck a nerve with me.  Are you able to live a normal life or do you have medical conditions because of it?  I know it may be an ignorant question but I care about my friends whether they are in the REAL world or the forum [:D]

importkiller -> RE: Sorry Doctors (1/11/2007 5:14:22 PM)

thanks Mike,

I live a relatively normal life. I have no pancreas so my body makes zero insulin. I take 8-10 shots of different insulins per day. Pancrease also makes or stores byle (forgot which) to digest food, I don't have any of that either so I have to take 3 digestive enzyme pills everytime I eat anything. I take 3 percoset 10's a day to deal with pain and I can't work anymore but I'm still kickin. Just makes me that much more thankful when I wake up and am able to kiss my son and wife.

Dennis -> RE: Sorry Doctors (1/11/2007 6:47:27 PM)

Sorry for all your problems Mike..Glad to see you can keep your spirits up in spite...

FYI;

Bile is produced by hepatocytes in the liver, draining through the many bile ducts that penetrate the liver. During this process, the epithelial cells add a watery solution that is rich in bicarbonates that dilutes and increases alkalinity of the solution. Bile then flows into the common hepatic duct, which joints with the cystic duct from the gallbladder to form the common bile duct. The common bile duct in turn joins with the pancreatic duct to empty into the duodenum. If the sphincter of Oddi is closed, bile is prevented from draining into the intestine, and instead flows into the gall bladder, where it is stored and concentrated between meals, reaching up to five times the original potency. This concentration occurs through the absorption of water and small electrolytes, while retaining all the original organic molecules. Cholesterol is also released with the bile, dissolved in the acids and fats found in the concentrated solution. When food is released by the stomach into the duodenum in the form of chyme, the gallbladder will release the concentrated bile to complete digestion.

BTW..I feel your pain on th insulin..I have my Pancreas..But I have Zero C-peptides..I do five shots or more of Lantus and Apidra a day.

importkiller -> RE: Sorry Doctors (1/11/2007 7:03:35 PM)

you shouldn't be taking that many injections of Lantus...lantus is a basal rate insulin that stays in your body for 24 hours. Normally Lantus is taken once a day or twice a day in severe diabetics. I have tried all of em but have settled on NPH70/30 three times a day, Humalog with meals and some new stuff twice a day. Problem is that I am becomming insulin resistant...which blows casue I am already at over 250 units a day.

Dennis -> RE: Sorry Doctors (1/11/2007 7:09:56 PM)

250??? holy chit!..Talk to your endocrinologist about Actos..that's suppose to help with Insulin resistance..I take 30mg/day of that too...

I shoot up with Lantus..once in the morning 30 units and once at bedtime 25units..the Apidra just before every meal and depends on what or who I'm eating determines how much (approx 15 to 25 units each meal) it is fast acting like the Humalog (same class of insulin, different maker)

BTW; Remember it is best to prick you finger and not the other way around..[:D][:D]

importkiller -> RE: Sorry Doctors (1/12/2007 12:41:45 AM)

I knew the panceas had something to do with digestion, that explains it. I have no gallbladder, common byle duct, pancreatic duct...I basically have a big ole hollow spot where everything should be. [:D]

Yea my insulin regimen sucks, I take 60 units of 70/30 in the am and 60 units before bed. I take 40 units of humalog in the morning and 4 times more throughout the day and 30 units at night unless my sugar levels are high then I take 50. So on average I take a total of 320 units a day. If I don't eat it will drop to 200-250, if I eat a big meal it will go up to over 400 units. My problem is that because I have no pancreas at all my body is actually producing glucose, for example my sugar is normally around 250-280 when I go to sleep, when I wake up even though I took insulin before bed my sugar will be around 350 in the morning. I haven't had a day where I averaged under 225 since this all happened to me in 1998. My doctor is afraid that I am going to lose my eyesight and possibly limbs, especially now that I have Diabetic Neuropathy in my hands and feet. Thats why he wants me to get a pancreatic transplant asap.
