That is why I have always been a fan of oil analisys every 3000 miles and changing the filter when you pull the sample. The filter catches the junk, and the oil gets replaced when its useful life has expired, and the owner will typically see a savings from the saved oil changes. All of the major trucking companies use this principal because the oil changes are so damned expensive, but filters and analisys is cheap.
At any rate, if you hit your change intravel but cant afford a full oil change, you are doing your vehicle a world of good if all you do is replace the filter and the quart it holds then doing nothing.
