This afternoon I was driving on the highway and for the first time I tried to reach the H3 max speed.

BUT, when I reached the 100 mph line the engine abruptly stopped ( ignition cut off )... and re started again just below the 100 mark!!

is there a speed limiter built in or is just my car?

if there is one, does anyone know how to by pass it

A lot of vehicles now have speed limiters in their computers to prevent tire failure liability, but they just limit throttle setting. Shutting the engine off and restarting at high speed could, IMO, be a dangerous process. It would be surprising to me if GM programmed it that way.

When my PCM was reprogrammed, the speed limiter was removed. (Limiter originally set at around 100mph.)

I had the feeling that the engine stopped in fact it just lost power until I was just below 100mph and started again normally.

I then remain just below the 100 mark for 1 or 2 minutes without any vibration or problems, the engine was doing 3200 rpm.

my usual speed is about 85/95 on the highway the engine does 2850/3000 rpm at that speed.
never had a problem not even a small vibration and the car has already 5000 miles after less than 60 days since I bought it.

one of my friend has a Grand Cherokee 5.7 hemi, he does have a limiter but when he hits the 110+ mph.
could that be a trick from GM Europe?

I think they are capped at 96 or 98 mph ... I'm rather surprised it would cut the ignition off though .. all off a sudden no power brakes, no power stearing .. Are you sure it didn't just cut fuel delivery to bring you down under the cap/governor? I had this very same thing happen to me in my old Avalanche before I had said cap removed ... I was told at that time this is what happens ...

Pretty sure it's 96MPH.

My '96 Blazer shut off the fuel at 96. I discovered it when coming home from Ole Miss one day, haulin down I-55. I did it again just to make sure. And sure enough, 96MPH was the magic number.

Yes, GM usually sets it's vehicles to shut off at 100 mph. And yes it shuts off, but restarts the moment it drops back below that number. I would have to assume that the H3 is the same, but don't know for sure. Becuase it shuts off right at 100, and restarts right away once under 100, it's usually not going to be a problem. The powerless experience should only last a second or so, so I doubt there is any real danger. I would rather it not did it, but I'm not the chief designer at GM. Most re-programers usually have an option to raise the limter speed, or do away with it completely.

It is actually 98mph. Im pretty sure GM has electronically limited (with a fuel shutoff) all trucks and suv's at least since I had a '97 S-10

Thanks for the info,

I can understand Mercedes and BMW having a limiter programmed at 155 mph but 98!!!

the H3 can do much better than that and still remain very safe. I shall have this limiter removed and find out what this car is upto.

any idea about the best way to take it off??

I saw a Range Rover roll several times at 90-100 mph on the I-5 a few years ago. The guy had just passed me in my Montero seconds before. I was going about 75 and he went by me like was standing still. It was straight and dry too. Since seeing that, I have no urge to go anywhere near 100 in any SUV, especially one with big squishy 33s.

JM, yes, there is a speed limiter on the H3 and it is set at 100 miles an hour! A buddy of mine has a friend that tried it on his H3 and his did the same thing when he reached 100 on the speedometer.

I just installed (today) a PCMforless and had the speed limiter taken out. I just may try it to see what happens!

Good luck with that.

I can already tell you that the dealer isn't going to take it off for any reason you can come up with. (unless of course you get some shady service tech to do it for you, without the managments knowledge.) Where are you driving 100 mph at anyway? I'm not sure how I feel about them putting the limiter on there.... but, at the same time, I'm uneffected by it because I have no need to drive 100 plus mph.

If you're driving that fast, and have a wreck and kill someones family, you had better pray to whomever you believe in, that it's not mine.
