How many miles should I go before the first oil change on a new H3?

Synthetic or regular?

Pro's / Con's ?

Damn, but not to sound redundant. I love your avatar. First change 1000 miles. Then 3000-5000 thereafter. Synthetic.

I changed mine at 500 and every 3000 or so. I know it's over protective, but I can't help it.

Perfectly sound advise by all that replied here...Mine: first 1000 miles, then 4000 miles later, then every 5000 there after..Cheap insurance!

Castrol Syntec...And before you ask..there is a whole other thread or two about engine oils somewhere here.

Hey Dennis,

I believed the on board computer tells you when it's time to change oil!

Am I wrong?

Nope..he's right..

GM in it's infinite wisdom thought it would be best to remind a HUMMER owner that his oil is ready for a change...it kicks out a message on the DIC (Driver's Information Center) to let you know that your oil is old and tired..I think it's around 7500 miles when it does this...In the OM it says to reset this timer (if you will) at each oil change..No biggy if you forget to..and OnStar is monitoring it for you too.

I changed mine at 2,500. Then plan on going 5,000 after that. I use Royal Purple and although I see no difference in performance it has a good report even from Amsoil testing.

I received an Onstar report last week and it said that I was at 98% and my next oil change would be around 9,100 miles????? I don't think it can tell if you are using synthetic?

I change when the DIC lets me know. Been using that system with the wifes Cadillac SRX for the past 39000 miles without a problem. With synthetic it works out to between 9000 to 11000 miles.

When you add oil through the oil filler cap, it goes through a microprocesser to analize it. The data is then set to GM by way of On Star.
GM then makes the decision on their findings, gives it to On Star to download to your vehicle. Your onboard computer then gives you a % of oil life based on run time, temp, miles, and stop and go driving

The last part is true.
