Okay guys, I have a 1996 6.5 TD

Symptoms:

Hard start
Stall once in awhile
Runs in Advanced timing
I can go up to 65mph no problem but engine timing sounds advanced during idle.
Code keeps coming up P0251 and P0370
I am sure I am not the only one who has this issue
No major smoke during startups, actually seems normal.
When I clear the codes it sometimes runs like normal with no codes thrown then sometimes it will advance timing and the codes kick on.

Some fixes I did:

Change Oil
Replaced Oil Pressure switch
Drain Fuel bowl
purged air
replaced PMD
replaced lift pump

Is there something I am missing?  I already ordered another Injection Pump but want to exhaust my options before I do the work.

P0251 = Injection Pump Fuel Metering Control A (Cam/Rotor/Injector)
P0370 = Timing Reference High Resolution Signal A

Sounds to be a problem with the Injector Pump....

Take a look at the diagnostic steps listed in the pictures attached.... they should help youtroubleshoot.  Also, get yourself a service CD :-) and visit the HML!!

ok... so I guess you now want to see the list for P0370.... Here it is.... and no, this isn''''t a real common failure....

(you might also have a bad PCM)

oops.... step 5 from the P0370 says

"
5 NOTE: The scan tool must display Last Test Failed (under DTC, Specific).
This ensures that fault is active while performing this test.
1. Maintain the engine speed at the point of failure, per the conditions
saved in the Freeze Frame/Failure Records.
2. With the DVOM on the Hertz scale, back probe the high resolution signal
circuit at the PCM.
Referring to the Engine Speed vs. Hertz table does the Hertz reading in the
table correspond with the Hertz reading on the DVOM at the designated
RPM (+ 100 Hz)?"
