Since the headlights on our 08 H3 suck, I was wondering if removing that screw inside that holds that plastic piece over the lamp improves it.  Anyone done that or are they sealed?

If it can''t be done, I guess I would have to replace the entire headlamp or bulb.

I''ve read some other threads that suggest sylvania makes some better ones
I''ve seen silverstar, xtravision, ultra mentioned.  Is there a consensus on best value?

Dont recomend doing this, you think they suck now do this and you will be really unhappy. Do a search in this forum about HID headlights, you will find much info here on headlight upgrades from other members.,

Check the alignment of them...a little low and they''ll suck.
Or if you like using a big wrench to fix a little problem, crank your T-Bars to lift the entire front of the truck.

I have the SIG HID lights on mine.  WOW!! what a BIG difference.  The factory headlights are horrible!!  I had to learn the hard way when i hit a deer, never even had a chance to react.  Now with my new ones I can see a mile away.  Great inprovement!  Only bad thing is the cheapest ones i found are about 899.00 but well worth the money.  Make sure the are made by SIG.  These are SPECIALLY for the H3.  It basically replaces the factory ones, not alot wiring crap to deal with.

Well we don''t have that kind of money for $900 headlights but thanks guys - I was just really looking for a reasonable improvement at a reasonable price or no price but I guess my first idea wont work.  Do you just replace the bulbs in these or are they sealed beams?  Are there procedures anywhere or is it pretty obvious?  anyone got part #s for the H3 headlights?

I too have the HID system from SIG.
These are truly wonderful headlights.
Not inexpensive, but you are one hundred percent right, in saying they are worth
the money. It''s just hard to tell people the major difference in these lights over stock
halogen or any other halogen lights
Halogen bulb output is about 900 lumens and projector HID''s are about 3200 lumens
and last about three times as long

Are lights like these any better?  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400001875661

It seems lights seem better when they are a different color of the spectrum.  Is that what the silverstars are? more of a white light than a yellow?  On other posts, I''ve seen sylvanias described as H13ST & H13XV.  Are these part #s from advance or other store or manufacturer #?

And what is this Conversion Kits ("Illegal")
HID 35w Ballast = ~$110 vary
HID 50w Ballast = ~$160 vary
all about?  why are conversions illegal?  I''m guessing this is just a way to increase power to the light?

The following kits do not come with a projector housing unit which makes for an improper beam pattern. These kits use the factory housing unit which in turn needs the same sized HID bulbs. The SIG HID kits uses the street legal projector housing, 35w ballast and D1S bulbs. As you know the projector housing allows the light to be focused in an semi-controlled pattern away from oncoming drivers and eliminating most of the glare.

HID 35w Ballast = ~$110 vary
HID 50w Ballast = ~$160 vary

The 50w ballast overclocks the HID bulbs to a high wattage but will wear the bulbs out faster. The company that sells these gives you the option to choose the light color from 4300k-10000k, you would have to ask about 3000k and 12000k.
Just for reference:
head lights - H13, fog lights - H10/9008, lower grille lights - 9005, hood light cowls (primarily sold by Predator Motorsports) - H3
