diccHi Everybody

I´m thinking about building a 1,5 foot snorkel by myself, using a 4" PVC pipe, and sticking it directly to the intake and to the air filter. I´d like to hear your suggestions about it. Is it correct or better to make an aluminium one. Or may be there is propper scuba tube that I can buy around. Which is better?
All your comments will be very helpul, because the places where I move thought, sometimes have some water in the middle of the way and I don´t want a wave to enter throught the air breather.

I am going to be doing the same thing. There is a tutorial out there I personally forget the link but its pretty straight forward just use a PVC pipe and silicon the ends... Just remember the more silicon you use the more perminant the snorkle will be.

Great to know, I was thinking that for logical reasons has to work, but is better consulting all of you for your experience in those matters.

be sure to secure it at the top.... otherwise it will beat up your windsheild / frame...

Id definately go with PVC, its cheap and wont rust or dent like aluminum

what is the reason for the large snorkel? looks is one thing but if you think that you will be able to go threw more that 30 inches of water think again. the humvees have what is called a deep fording kit on them that will let them drive into water up to the windshield. if you go deeper that the 30 inches of water your exaust will fill up with water, your vent lines to all your drive trane will be under water and you only have water tight wire connectors at or below that 30 inch mark.
i have changed three engines and a couple of fans and radiators due to the customer trying to deepford their hummers.

I saw a h1 yesterday with a snorkel on it. I think his was alum. I was amazed you dont see many h1''s around here it was green with a tan soft top. Looked like he off roaded it.

Bow Waves, Rogue Waves, Up/Down hill water surges... I almost hydra locked my engine from such an incident. Hit a water hole too quick the water went up the hill then back down and over my hood. Also the fact of going deeper then 30inches the exhaust will fill sure if you turn the engine off but not if its still running and pushing out pressure, the army only required the deep fording exhaust kit because they wanted to ford 60" then turn the truck off in that water for a minute then turn it back on and resume. If you offroad in water a snorkle is good to have, and yea maybe the electricals etc wont be able to handle the deep water but atleast you know your engine wont suck that up and I''d rather replace some electricals then some electricals and a engine. Now its not like we mean to go deeper then over the hood but sometimes you can drive through a shallow river bed to only end up in a deep old beaver nest or something similar to that. I know I know takes a canuck to talk about beavers :P

Hummech is absolutely right on this.

Another issue is the dust/duckbill on the botton of the air can, this can be a water injestion point as well, no matter how high your snorkel is. Put your hand under the air can near the wheel skid plate and you''ll feel it. Water can get in through the dust trap.

The h1''s aren''t sealed like the humvees.

for looks is one thing, but for a bow wave protection maybe a 4 to 6 inch extension will do? I have a 4 in ext (the home depot version from bluehummer), which puts the mushroom-cap is atleast 50 inches high. I hope I never have to ford more than 3 ft, any deeper and you are risking other problems like urine stains on the seats (thank god for the drain plugs). Always change the hub/diff fluids after deep water. Incase you don''t do it already, clean out the duck-bill after a dirty trail run. You''d be amazed at how much dirt will be in there.

Many safari vehicles have snorkels because the air is cleaner the higher you go. The fantastic aerodynamics of our trucks might negate this?

You are right that deeper than 30" should not be good for the vehicle health, but sometimes, where I live I find some deep holes in the midle of your path (of course not 30"), but some of them like the one i post in the picture below. It was last Saturday when I went to the Supermarket, I had to go back home and look for the H1 in order to cross that one. Water was 4" below the air intake, so just a wave could cause problems. May be you are right that with a 4-6 inch extension is enought to solve those situations.
Anyway is fun to cross some water from time to time. There are alternative roads I recognize, but I´m happier using my old roads.

I agree that after the mud bath is important to clean the vehicle, I did so and really get a lot of dirt...

as mentioned earlier, going that deep you might want to change the hub/diff fluids or at least check them for water contamination.

I will have to side with Hummtech on this one. The snorkle may look good to some, but anything that puts water over the hood would indicate a need to immediately get your arse out of whatever you have gotten into and there is more to it that one point of entry regarding the engine sucking water if it was fully under.

I agree with you all that we should never be that deep, nor would I ever want my hummer that deep but the fact of the matter is I live in canada specifically southern ontario, and there isnt much rocks around here so I play in mud and water so a snorkle is not only a must have but it is also peace of mind. You never always know how deep a stream or mud hole is all the way through untill you go into it. Sure you could always go in the same pits and follow the same route on a stream but mud pits can change over night if some boys with 44''''''''s + decide to play all night in it. So some might think its unfunctional or not required but I bet you they dont play in mud as much as the ones that find the functionality of it. I''''''''d rather replace hub/diff fluids then a hydra locked engine block. And yes I know about the duck bill but they make a plug for that :)

Its almost like having runflats. You dont install runflats so you can go out and get a flat you install runflats so if you do get a flat you will have peace of mind knowing you can get to level ground(if wheelin) to change a tire or make it to the next service station.
