This morning I was slowly backing up with my wheels cut to the right and I heard a loud sound that seemed to come from the right front. It's hard to describe but it sounded as if something was bound up and broke free. Now I have had issues with the steering feeling very vague and the truck being somewhat difficult to drive. I am constantly having to make steering corrections I noticed this when the dealer gave me a loaner and that rigs steering felt much more exact to me than mine. The dealer told me that the feeling depends on tire pressue. I run mine at 37psi. Another thing is I just had my first service and the tech at pep boys told me that my tires were not wearing evenly. He had me rum my hands over the tire and in one direction it felt smooth and the other it was very rough. For some reason the dealer keeps telling me that they can't find anything wrong, but I'm sure that they are missing something. Being challenged mechanically I really have nothing to say back to the dealer when they tell me that there's no problem. Any ideas?

Did you turn the wheel to the extreme left and rights while parked and see if the wheel is actually turning? It sound like you may have a loose or broke CV joint, shock mount or even a broken or loose tie rod. You need to steer that wheel and see if it's even turning properly.

Also, when the wheel is turned, grab the tie rod and drive shafts and try to shake and jiggle them. IF they make any kind of clanking noise or feel loose, you know what the problem is. You better drive that thing REALLY slow to the dealer. Remember what happened to the other H2's with the wheels falling off while driving!!

Also, grab the entire wheel in question and try to manually steer it and turn it. Shake it and see if it feels loose.

It could be something as simple as the lug nuts being loose, but it doesn't sound like it. Tighten those up also.

your steering being loose could be a worn pitman arm, or sector shaft on the steering box. as for the loud sound, try taking off the skidplate and turning full each way. my skidplate makes all kinds of noises, there's really no way to tighten it so it won't creak and pop when the frame twists on full turns. if you have a broken cv joint you'll feel it in the steering for sure. if the tie rod is broken, you're not going anywhere. should be easy enough for the dealer to resolve.

Huh. never thought of he skid plate. As far as worn parts, it only has 4000 miles on it. Anyways, their coming to pick it up with a flat bed.

Good deal..better to be safe than sorry...At any rate, the way you described the drive and handling, it didn't sound safe.

Hope they get it fixed right, or maybe we'll have to go down there and set things straight.
