The Prius (and other hybrid cars that use NiMH batteries) probably doesn''t effect the output of the Sudbury mine all that much. All of the nickel mined would be used up regardless.
If not in the Prius, than in laptops, cordless phones, power tools, etc.

I''m just tired of everyone thinking they have to justify the purchase of a Hummer to the greenies. There''s more factors to a vehicle buying decision than just MPG. Hummer fits my lifestyle, and I can afford it, period - end of discussion.

The story was a poorly researched article by a college student who wrote it in 1/2 an hour and based it on a junk science so-called study. See bottom of http://www.mercurycougar.net/forums/showpost.php?p=226745&postcount=8
quote:

Hell, I threw the paper together in 1/2 hour of being bored. I was just having fun lol.

Although he is still anti hybrid, he admitted in this followup that the CNW study is questionable. He is also wrong in claiming that the Tesla Roadster is $30K when they are over $100K per Tesla .

The Sudbury mine story has been retracted http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/news/article-417227/Toyota-factory.html

The CNW study he cited has been thoroughly debunked:

You can look at their junk at http://cnwmr.com/nss-folder/automotiveenergy/DUST%20PDF%20VERSION.pdf . Do some simple math and you will find it makes no sense. Somehow to them, they claim a Prius costs $13K to make, yet $325K to dispose of. CNW claims that it costs a mere $93 of energy to recycle the Prius battery.

BTW, they claim that a Hummer H2 accumulates $356K in non-recyables disposal energy costs on p. 255 and that total energy cost for an H2 is from $596K to $664K on p. 284 for a claimed 197K mile lifespan. Assume that an H2 really lasts 197,000 miles and you get 10 mpg and gas costs $5/gal. The gasoline cost only 98,500. Subtract the vehicle cost, say $60K. That leaves you with $437,500 of energy costs. Take off another $30K for maintenance. Where does the other $400K come from?

Even the numbers for a Hummer make no sense.

BTW, regarding the claim by RyanCodyH3 that the batteries need to be changed every 3 to 5 years, the Prius batteries are warranted for 10 years/150K miles on CA and CARB states and 8 years/100K miles for everyone else.

Be sure to tell http://john1701a.com/prius/owners/jesse4.htm that his 349K mile Prius should last only 100K miles. Also, be sure to tell these guys http://avt.inl.gov/hev.shtml who took two current gen Priuses to 160K miles as well as two previous gens along with http://www.autospies.com/news/Prius-taxi-paid-for-itself-in-no-time-17638 and http://www.hybridexperience.ca/Toyota_Prius.htm who hit 248K miles on his current gen and 206K miles on a previous gen.

Priuses nor Hummers are the right vehicle for everyone.  Although I have my views as to what people should buy (and they most likely do not agree with those on this board), at least people should be buying/not buying based on CORRECT information.  Even, I honestly do not think everyone should all buy hybrids, that is too extreme.

Basing decisions on total utter junk science is just wrong.  Perpetuating a junk science story that has no basis in fact and refuses to die is at is also wrong and at best, annoying.

If people actually spent a few minutes to READ the assertions being given and evaluate them.  They would see that it is crap instead of just taking it at face value.  This ought to go for any "news" story (car related or not), instead of blindly following random stuff on the "Interweb".  Just because it is on the Internet does not mean it is true.  When I heard about this crap springing up on a Hummer forum, I just could not let this go unchallenged without at least getting people to open their eyes.

It is just mind blowing how many people think the story and claims are true because they didn''''t do the above.

Unlike the story the OP posted and many of the assertions made in this thread, what I posted IS NOT bullshit.

Per my post:

There are plenty of trolls on priuschat.com which pop up from time to time. I am NOT a troll. I am NOT putting down your rides. I am merely trying dispell MYTH and MISINFORMATION by having readers critically evaluate assertions being passed off as FACT.

It seems that some of you are so close minded as to not even want to do some simple math and instead just label me as a troll for posting the truth. In addition, some of you are unwilling to read a retraction by the author and analyses of all that is wrong with the CNW so-called study.

The CNW junk science is so riddled with misinformation and numbers picked out of the air with no basis in fact that even the numbers for a Hummer MAKE NO SENSE.
