will it fit? yes.... will you need to do some mods.... yes.... if you are comfortable with that.... then have at it..... it appears the be the "upgraded" unit.... which would also require you to change your electronics and your control switch for the HVAC as your current style will not operate this one.... I believe you might also have to install a vacuum pump - as the doors are all operated by vacuum on the newer unit.....

Thats not always the case.... folks with a ''96 are heavily favoring the 97.5 HVAC upgrade as prior to the upgrade, you would struggle to get your windows defrosted.... and the system is just totally inadequate.... but... granted there are less changes between 96 and 97.5 then there are between 93 and 97.5

Some upgrades/updates ( 97.5 HVAC, butterfly mirrors, Alpha steering wheel, 17" wheels & tires ) just make too much sense not to do. These things not only make the truck more enjoyable but increase value as well.

I agree on anything such as you listed 3hummers, but anything mechanical I personally would stay stock. The reason being is you can hardly find anyone to work on an H-1 now, and if it has been modified that just makes it harder to get correct parts etc. That is just my opinion, a lot depends on you local area and service/support available. Now the A/C is a different animal to some degree because I do not even know if they make the original for that year anymore. With many changes come changes to the wiring harnesses, etc. and hacking into those is just not what I would want to do.

There are a lot more spares parts for the later models than the early years. That could force you into an upgrade to later year systems.
