Hey guys,

New member here. I''m somewhat interested in H1s that I see on the market for around $40,000, but these are all powered by the earlier 6.5 liter turbo diesel and not the Duramax that came later. First off, in which year was it switched to the Duramax? And most important, are there reliability issues with the earlier engine? Anything to watch out for?

Thanks!

Henry

many have swapped their 6.5 for a d-max (starting at $20k), and AMG used them in their last year, ''06. ''96 through ''00 td''s have a 50/50 chance of being bad

Most of the bad block motors have been replaced by now. Most were replaced at under 30K miles. You can check through AMG with the serial number to see if a block has been replaced. I have a 97 with 60K miles on it and no issues.

Thanks, guys! What exactly does a bad block mean, though? Bad bottom end? Bad top? What failed with the earlier cars?
