Admmitidly I have done this as well.  I was 20 and Beers where involved.  It was in my Duragno.  My speek was about 45mph.  It just stalled the motor.  I was able to put it back into Neutral while still rolling and start it back up.  Did not miss a beat.

Do me, yourself, and GF a favor, check the transmission fluid.  Does it look brown/dark or smell burnt, is it at the right level.

If you have Onstar, run a diagnostic check, if nothing comes up, drive it and forget about it.  If you have a code, what she did will not be covered by warranty, so mums the word!!!  What happened?  "I don't know, it just isn't working right."

Next, teach your GF how to drive.     [sm=icon_rtfm.gif]  There is no such thing as coasting!!!  In many ststes it is illegal to coast.  Duh!!
That is why ATs have a P for PARK, D for DRIVE, and R for REVERSE.  Neutral is for being towed at the most, really stands for NOT MOVING, definitely not C for Coast.  [8|]

You may not wanna kick her (especially if she lOOks gOOd), but she don't sound like the sharpest knife in the drawer.  [;)]

A dull knife is better than no knife at all [:D]

Denisa, this is the best advice to follow.

D VADER -> RE: Changing from N to R at 55MPH! (5/17/2008 5:09:49 AM)

I did the R mistake many years ago in my Dad's new 1958 Buick.  It had a Dynaflow transmission.  I musta thought R was for "Race"!  The engine wined like it had been kicked in the balls but thank God for my a$$ it didn't hurt anything! I broke out in a cold sweat!

rhill20 -> RE: Changing from N to R at 55MPH! (5/17/2008 7:26:25 PM)

I've done this in the other direction before, otherwise none as a "reverse slam". Yup, that didn't end well. Try explaining to your dad how the tranny fell out when he worked on cars enough to KNOW what happened. He just sat there and let me squirm for awhile before dropping the hammer. Let's just say that I rode a bike to work for the summer that year. [:D]

Cape Critter -> RE: Changing from N to R at 55MPH! (6/18/2008 10:41:09 PM)

My Dad works at the truck assembly plant in Oshawa, ON  and the first thing a truck goes through right off the assembly line is get driven to 35 mph and then thrown into park - the rear wheels lock up and there is a bunch of tire squeeking going on. The theory is if anything is ever going to break, its going to break then. I don''t know if they do this to Hummers or just Silverados.

Interesting...never heard that before.

Forget kicking her, give her a nice big mushroom to the face!!!

[:@][:@][:@] Hope the rig is okay. My stepdad did this in his 1980something 300zx and he said nothing happened, the car just howled really loudly and shut off, worked fine afterwards, but I''d run it up to the dealer and see if the tranny checks out.
