What are Black Out Lights?
The US Army devised a strategy to use the tail lights and marker lights on vehicles to not only evade detection from the enemy, but also to help with the problem of conducting vehicle movement at night under black out conditions. These specially designed military lights are called Black Out Lights.
The original "WW II" Humvees and Jeeps had these mounted on them to evade capture during night operations and are still in use today.

(I guess this puts me in the same catagory as "Hummerguy" with his off road light design.)

Have you ever actually tried to drive with them? It isn't fun, you're not going to see much past your bumper and we are taught not to drive much faster than idle speed while using them.

Cool find though.

Sooo... do they just shine down???? picture of them in action???? Ive been wondering what those were ever since I saw them on this '92......

Black out drive lights work best when used in conjunction with Night Vision Devices (NVD). They basically illuminate just the ground in front of the vehicle. I've driven down dirt roads at about 40 MPH using black out drive and NVG's. It scares the crap out of your passengers who don't have NVD's.

Lots of the guys with restored Humvees have them on their trucks. I have driven with NV goggles but not with black out lights.

Thank you all for your questions and comments.
And since there was much feed back on this posting, I was inspired and decided to go on ebay and aquire the full ensamble of BLACKOUT TAILIGHTS and MARKER LIGHTS for the FRONT and REAR.
As soon as I finish reconditioning them and mounting them appropiatly, I will post some photos.
Although the actual use of BLACKOUT LIGHTS is very limited and almost slim to none but the look of having them mounted and working on a HUMMER proves very satisfying.
