H1 Soft Top - take on/off help

yellow7 -> H1 Soft Top - take on/off help (5/8/2008 12:42:24 PM)

I have a 2002 Soft Top H1 and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations/instructions for taking the top on and off. I want to remove it but I have no clue what the process is.

Thanks for any replies.

J

I have talked to a lot of open top owners that have said getting it off is fairly easy and putting it back on is a two man job. Not sure but I know a lot of open top guys that have never had the top off.

I have had my top off for several months now (just had a new roll cage put in) -- it is great, but not sure I'd want to wheel with it off and eat dirt. It's about 10 minutes to take it off and about 15 to 20 to put it back on. It can be done solo, but a helper is nice. With the top off I've had several people come up and say "nice jeep...uh, what kind of jeep is this?" They are shocked when I say hummer.

That is pretty much the same thing most of the guys I have talked to have said. They usually wheel when it is hot, dusty, or muddy and none are really conducive to enjoying the top down. Probably be cool to drive around town with the top off though.

driving with top off would be cool in an older H1, with a more basic, rugged interior. especially driving in the dunes with the top down!  with an alpha, it would only be good on the street and maybe beach because of all the lether/luxury.

Depends on how much time you want to spend cleaning I guess. They way sand gets into everything I don't think I would want my top down in anything.

I had an original 98 softtop on my hummer it was beaten... the tub that goes into the gutter was falling apart and that is by far the hardest part to do. But even with that I could always take it off and put it back on myself... at the end though it was more like a 45min job since I had to rewraping the tubing for the gutter... thats when I finally decided to trash the thing and get a hardtop but now that nice weather is back I plan on getting a "bikini" top made which will be fully weather proof just wont have the insulation which dont matter to me since I will be using my hardtop in the colder months... with a bikini you can simply roll the top onto the windshield frame instead of having to take it all the way off and put it back on etc... im sure you can roll it and unroll it in under 5min. Definitely would be a great buy if you live in an area that isnt dry all the time and enjoy being topless....
