OK here goes.... I have searched the forums and found some information on towing. Most seem to be with the I5. Also a few posts about boats. I am concerned the camper will have more drag than a boat so here is my question.......

I have the H3 Alpha towing cap is 6000lbs, I would love to keep weight down but get what I want. If I buy a 4000lb camper dry weight should I be OK? I have to factor in adding AC, Awning etc and then my clothes, gear etc. I figure I should be able to stay around 5500. I have a 99 Silverado with the 6.0L vortec engine rated at 7200 lbs. It is getting high miles on it and would prefer to get something I can tow easily behind the ole H3. I use to tow a 3900lb dry weight camper behind it and it was very very pleasent.

Any thoughts, experiences would be very welcome..

Thanks

Welcome to the forum 211! I hope somebody can answer your questions. There are a few active members that pull campers with their H3's.

My trailer is around 3000 lbs dry.  I have towed it with the water tank full ( add 500 lbs ),  lots of firewood, all our gear, etc..I was probably right around 4000 lbs.  I have the I5.  It towed good, was able to cruz at 55 mph, slowed to 45 or so on some steeper hills, not too bad. As you can see the trailer is much bigger than then the H3 so it gets its fair share of drag.

Ac and awning dont add that much weight, refrigerators can get heavy.

You should be fine with a 4000lb dry camper, personally I would feel safe going over 4000 lbs dry weight if I had the Alpha.

Sounds like you have a nice looking H3

My trailer is a 2008 15' American Freedom.  www.freedomtoyhaulers.com   My model isnt on their website.

Its a good entry level trailer, has all the amenities you need for a decent price.

That was about 5,500 lbs behind an I5.
Towing power was moderate at best.  65mph was about my top speed.  70 going downhill but it was scary.  DEFINATELY could have used a trailer brake.  Brake pedal to the floor and it just barely got it woahed down.

No trailer brakes would be scary

Mine has electric brakes and it stops like your not towing anything.

I also sprung for the weight distributing hitch and anti-sway.

I'm trying to work the wife into a FunFinder instead of a campervan. It would fit in our garage too.

You guys have all the toys

I think you'd be fine, 211.  2000 is a lot of wiggle room for added gear.  Plus, a hundred or two hundred extra pounds doesn't make a world of difference.  Good luck!
