On my way home, I bought an issue of Four Wheeler magazine, the June issue to be precise.  Anyhoo...  located inside is an article titled "CLUNK NO MORE".  Turns out that it's a two and a half page article with loads of pictures on fixing the GM steering shaft noise that I keep reading threads about.

After a dissertation on the hows and whys of the 'clunking' and some of the GM 'fixes', they show an installation of an aftermarket shaft that cures the noise.  It's a Borgeson Universal replacement intermediate shaft.  This thing is more beefy than Chef Boy-ar-dee and supposedly installs in a half-hour or so.

I wanted to mention this so that you folks with this problem could get this issue and look it over.  If I had a scanner, I would have scanned it and entered the data, but........

Enjoy, Cliff

Whoops, I didn't notice that.  I have to re-read the article, my bad.  Duhh.

Well, I just got home and re-read the article.  The article does not specifically address any Hummer by model; it's written as; Chevy/GM/Hummer.  So when I read it I thought it was addressing the H3 steering shaft issues that I've read about.
