Was reading about the 08 H2's and it said they have a 6 speed auto backing the 6.2l. Will the new tranny fit older models?

It will FIT but will not get it to shift. The 08 and 07 vehicles use a totally different electronics system. The 6l85E trans can be used on an 07 Cadillac Escalade because in 07 Cadillac started using the new electronics.

So as far as putting the 6l85E in lets say an 05 Hummer - NO GO.

This place says they're working on a controller for the 6L80E http://www.powertraincontrolsolutions.com
wonder how long it will take? and how it will work.

Ummm the H2 uses a 4l65E  not a 4l80.  The new 6speed  Has the same casing with gear ratios that are a little bit differnet.  Essentially It uses the 3 gears in the engine and teams 2 of them with the over drive taking it from a 4 speed to 6 speed.   Physically yes it will fit.  But It would require some software work to make it work with the older engine.  The only reason I know anything about this is by father in law owns a tranny shop and we talk about this all the time.

As stated on the Hummer.com web site under H2 DETAILS-FEATURES & OPTIONS "TRANSMISSION:  Hydra-Matic 6L80 6-speed automatic".
07 and earlier use the 4L65.
As my earlier post stated that powertraincontrolsolutions.com  were working on an electronic controller for the 6L80 that would allow it to work no matter the PCM/ECU format.

Could you plug an '08 ECU into an earlier vehicle and have it work? Who wants to try?.......
