CB Radio Brake Interference

Ghostrider -> CB Radio Brake Interference (4/21/2008 2:55:55 PM)

I not so long ago installed a CB radio in the truck.  Its a blast having except one annoyance...everytime I touch the brakes and the electro-hydraulic pump kicks in, I get a major squeal on the radio.  My antenna is running from the rear roof and the radio is mounted under the seat.  Its no where near the actual pump and I dont even see wires that run there.  At first I thought it was the brake lights but its not every time and it even sounds like the pump kicking on.
Anybody else have a problem with this or know of a way to cut out CB interference?

10-4

Try adjusting your squelch to stop the interference. That will aslo reduce some unwanted background skip etc.

It happend on with the brakes on the H3 and with the windshield wipers on my Jeep.

Yeah... sounds like a ground loop....  did you ground to the frame?? or to the battery??

I just adjust the squelch and it reduces it somewhat.

Try tapping the brakes to the beat of the music.  [8|]

I wish my passenger had that...

I have a ground wire on my CB antena when it comes loose I get interference....ck that !

Ghostrider -> RE: CB Radio Brake Interference (4/21/2008 8:17:34 PM)

I dont have a separate ground.. Just the red & black power wires which are spliced off the cig. plug circuit behind the center dash.

I've tried adjusting the squelch and gain but to cut out the pump noise, is right about where a faint but still distinguishable signal can go through.

Guess I'll just have to keep tweaking and see what I can do to boost the signals

Check your antenna ground - that sounds like the culprit. Have you tested it with a SWR meter? You can get them at Radio Shack, about $40. If your antenna isn't well grounded you will have issues, or at least not the range you want. I had to do a ground wire for my antenna mount as the mount itself, an L bracket on the spare tire carrier, wasn't well grounded.

Radio Shack has a line noise filter for around $10 that should take care of it !

I get it.... but I also ran the antenna cable through the same grommit as the tail light wires which I'm sure didn't help.  [&:]

I went with a slightly less high tech way of running wires....just close the door on it.  Let the weather seal do its magic.
