Well, I must say, this was a fun experience this morning:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/04/18/illinois.earthquake/index.html

Never experienced one before. We didn't know what it was until after I left for work and heard it on the radio. One of our expressways had some metal support beam that came up through the pavement and was causing everybody's tires to blow out. I thought the doors rattling was from thunder. I thought it a bit odd that thunder would last so long

I'm sure the nice new crack going the entire width of my foundation in the basement may have gotten bigger. DOH!

it was only a 5.2 - that's not enough to get us out of bed in the morning . . . . .

Yeah I figured. Actually, I thought of you when I made this post

Our homes and streets aren't built to withstand them like they are over there. I didn't even feel it. My wife had to wake me up when the doors were shaking.

i'm not sure ours are so strong either.  2 years ago we had a piece of freeway in Sac drop about 8 inches - without an earthquake - during a week of 100+ heat.  if the heat can tank the highway, we're lucky we don't get big rollers in the valley.

all our bridges have been retrofitted over the past 5 - 10 years, and the highways in SF and LA are definitely built to withstand the shakes, rattles and rolls, at least the minor ones.  there's little that can be done to withstand the big ones. the northridge quake took down a big piece of bridge down south and a CHP cycle cop went down with it - it didn't come out well.

That's not good. Makes you grateful you have a Hummer. Of course, if that goes down a hill, the momentum may work against you.

We have been lucky here in Socal. No big quakes for a good while. I am sure our time is coming.

On the radio a few days ago, and even on CNN, it was said that siezmologists(sp?) said there is a 99.9% chance (yes, that was the number) that a major earthquake, perhaps the one dubbed "The Big One" was going to hit within the next 30 years in California.

I think you may have said that in a thread somewhere too 3hummers.

I am in Cincinnati and it woke my son up at 5:37 this morning.  I slept right though it.  I did not realize what woke him up untill I got to work and my business partner told me.

Yes we did talk about that in another thread. Earthquakes, stock market, housing, weather....I guess if you say something long enough you will eventually be right. I love it, the guy that said 30 years will be dead in 30 years so he won't have to eat crow whenever it doesn't happen.

Is it normal to have an aftershock 9 hours later? We just had one here in downtown Chicago.

One by the fault was 4.5, and they said it's not normal for this kind of fault.

Just wondering since this is new to me

You can have aftershocks for days and weeks after the initial earthquake. Some can approach the original quake in intensity.
