Hey all,

A customer of mine, tonite, was asking me about the H1. He wants to get one for bushwacking!!!

Right now he uses a Suburban and is VERY interested in an H1.

It will be SPECIFICALLY for off-roading so I told him about this forum and that I'd try to get some info for him so he can make an educated decision.

I know I kinda read that certain years had crappy tranny's and such!!!

Any help would be MUCHO APRECIADO!!!

97-2000 had the potential of the bad #8 cylinder. AMG replaced a lot of blocks and many didn't have the problem.
97.5 got an upgraded and considerably better HVAC
98 was the last year before TT4, which most off roaders hate
The 93-96 trucks were a little simpler trucks
Most of the rest of the mechanical stuff held up about the same from year to year.

Have your guy go to www.lynchhummer.com and go to the H1 section of their website. They have a year by year breakdown of what changed on the trucks. 1998 is considered a very good year for Hummers, particularly for off roading because they were the most refined truck before TT4 was introduced.

if its strictly for offroading i'd suggest 93-96... easier to repair... cheaper to repair(not as much expensive electrical stuff).... loudness of it wont matter... nor would lack of power(since lack of power is mostly felt during highway driving.) Also its more mechanical so less to worry about when its submerged in water/mud etc. Also they are lighter......

Sweet Injun!!

He told me he's quite mechanical so I guess these years would be easier for a DIY'er to fix!!!

Thanks!!

Up through 96 NA diesels are simpler. The electronics of the TD are what typically fail. The NA has noticably less power and torque, is significantly louder ( but you could dynamat the cab ) and will be a good bit slower on the highway. They also have the older HVAC system which barely works and is expensive to upgrade. In Canada that may not be the concern it is down here. I am talking to a guy about his 94 HMC4 primarily to use as an offroad truck but I have never had an NA in a Hummer before. He should drive both to see the difference if possible.
