Is this CAI For real?

tbigity -> Is this CAI For real? (1/22/2008 11:38:35 AM)

In my frantic search for search for a CAI that will not only increase HP but also be cost effective, I ran across these on ebay.  Can this be right?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320210797398&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:Watchlink:middle:us

Most others cost at least twice as much and the most I have seen as far as HP gains is  around 18 on the K&N.  This thing touts around a 25 HP gain AND they have a dyno graph to prove it.  Thoughts?  Am I missing something here?

Looks like a job by a plumber(no offense hummer plumper[;)])!!

Not a CHANCE!!!

bbb,bbb,bbb-but the dyno graph?  :-/

*bump*

Doc Olds?  Gunnyret?  either of you guys have $0.02 you wanna add?

Doc Olds -> RE: Is this CAI For real? (1/23/2008 12:52:46 PM)

I will add snake oil and magnets to double the power gain!!!! [8|]

First, the pic of the thing installed in the engine bay is apparently not what they are selling.  The mandrel bends they claim are in a plastic flex pipe that sell for appx $30.00 USD, and are not mandrel at all?  Next, the filter they have is what????  Finally as I have said many times, that is not a cold air intake.  Where does the cold air come from?  The stock system grabs more cold air than that from the inner passenger fender.

Last, duno results are not really applicable to real world driving, but are useful in testing tuning, to make sure you are moving in the correct direction.  So, the variables that we do not know about lead me to believe the dyno numbers are innacurate in that application.  Example, was the hood left open when pulls were done, was the engine at operating temp, what was the air temp and humidity at the test time, what was the elevation, was the PCM stock, was the intake the only thing being tested for that improvement.....on and on?

In the mean while, I suggest a K&N or other brand peformance filter.

Be patient, there is a better top quality and real system on the way to be priced around $150.00.  [;)]  Stay tuned.

tbigity -> RE: Is this CAI For real? (1/23/2008 1:00:42 PM)

See!  I love this guy.  Thanks.  I knew you'd, with your infinite amount of car know-how, would have an answer.  But Doc...I AM IMPATIENT!  How long must I wait?  I have been watching the K&Ns on ebay, and the Airraids.  They are both the same price ($199.99) but leaning toward the Airraid just because they have free shipping...is that a silly reason to go with a brand?

But seriously...is it going to be a profesh job or a shade-tree mechanic do-hickey?  True CAI?  Is this the first time you've dropped a hint of it on the forums?

Doc Olds -> RE: Is this CAI For real? (1/23/2008 1:27:57 PM)

Hypothetically, it would be made of steel, an easy anybody can do bolt on in approx 30 minutes with basic hand tools (if they can follow instructions) and has features and quality not available anywhere else.

So the beans stay in the can until the 06/07 H3 testing is complete, 3-5 weeks hypothetically. [;)]
Hypothetically, my nephew would have just leased an 08 so a system for it would be hot on the tails of the original and there are no kits for the 08 yet anywhere.
Well I guess that ebay thing does says 08? [8|]

tbigity -> RE: Is this CAI For real? (1/23/2008 1:33:28 PM)

haha, yeah...the ebay thing says a lot of things :-)

If you need a test hummer (of course...you have your own, I suppose), I'd pay for materials if you wanted to use mine.  Reason I ask is I am going to be purchasing in the next couple of weeks.  Probably before yours is done and CAIs are one of those things that once you get them, you don't really buy more.

Symbiosis as I see it.

Understood.  Patience is a virtue.  [8D]  [:D]

Thanks Joe! Looks like more of the same, though...right?  Not so much a "cold" air intake as it is just a "more" air intake.

Good price.  If you get this system, be prepared for vibration noise from the Pssgr side fender!  [;)]   True Flow does not customer support that little problem. [&o]

indyh2 -> RE: Is this CAI For real? (1/26/2008 2:41:31 PM)

I'm just being honest here...the piping that that uses looks like the sewage hose on my motor home...you know the ones that you hook to the septic tank and then dump into the ground at the camp grounds...am I the only one seeing that? I'd wait...Doc has something good in the works...I can just tell haha. It should be worth the wait!

The cannister is to small in relation to the filter and more than likely the cfm requirement per the revs to properly get air, I bet this thing howls when you hit the gas. CF is a good idea on the insulation from heat but to small IMO. I don't know how they dyno'd it when its always in 4wd. The hose is turbulant nightmare, if you notice most mainstream brands have smooth pipe, I wonder why??  "Go ahead" You could buy if you want to waste your money or to see what you actually get? The only closed cannister type intake that I know that works is Pipercross. One thing for sure I read the advertisment and the comparisons to weight and power make me laugh and say "SUCKER" all over it. These guys sure know how to pour the BS.  Its JUNK IMO.
I got to admit the sellers name sure fits the product BLING.

If you are so impatient about getting an intake. Get the GM performance intake its an AEM dry filter that fits in the box and replaces the flexable tubing.
