I thought that I had read here somewhere that you fine folks were having the dealer to install some of the aftermarket things like side steps, baskets, other cool add ons. I called my dealer and the service guy told me that was not their policy to install these things, even though they would have had to order it in from the same company, and the unit I have is still in the unopened factory box. I'm not asking for them to provide the warranty, other then on their labor, I just would like for the folks that have the service manuals to do the install.
And before you ask, I bought it direct, saving hundreds of dollars on the item, but the dealer will get his normal labor rate, so what's the problem? Am I wrong in my recall, or are there some magic way of getting this done?

In Australia the best way to install after market parts is a cold case of beer and a group of mates. Only ever costs as much as the beer, if you invite enough mates someone always ends up knowing how to do it.
Work on formula of half a case per head invited for best results

Over here most dealers will install those items for you...for their normal labor rate. Not sure what the problem is there. May just be the dealer isn't comfortable enough with the vehicle yet.

If the dealer won't do it, look for a good offroad shop. They'd probably do a good job and you might find some better deals, both on labor and products. And if they fab stuff, you're even better off!

Do it Yourself!   Every add on I can think of is bolt up with basic hand tools, why pay the dealer numbnuts to do it???

I must be missing something, what accessory would require a shop manual?

I'd think it would be a liability issue,,, is the installed items fail,,, consumer would go after the installing shop as well as the manufactor

Unfortunately Branstone, in addition to the aforementioned issues of competency, training, and manuals, there is also the missing items from your list of
Space to do the work, ability to physically do the work, competency in removing and re-installing factory trim (always a difficult task for me), competency in drilling holes and NOT hitting wires/carpet/other wrong things, and focus (need sufficient beer for motivation, after which insufficient clarity of thought to actually perform competently).
And items of interest are the Powersteps by Bestop, which according to their directions requires all of the above. I'm especially intimidated by the part about drilling holes and not hitting wires and carpet, and removing and reinstalling without breaking, the covers over the wire bundles and carpet edges. Followed closely by the mention of dis-assembly of the brake line, and re-assembly to maintain proper function. A bit more then I'm comfortable with. Give me a nice computer software program anyday. Anyway, thus is my conundrum.
My dealer location is in north dallas area, and I was hoping HummerGuy, I think it is, would weigh in on the query.

I asked Sewell Hummer in Dallas to install a hidden winch for my H3.  The parts guy said it was agains't corporate policy to do that.  He said it might weaken the front bumper??  I'm having a local off road shop to do it.
