to switch from normal 4-hi-open to 4-lo you put the tranny in neutral and then hit the button. wait a second, you'll hear a light clank, and you're set. from there you can lock the rear differential (though locked isn't always best for traction).

in any t-case setting (lo, high open, high locked) you can engage TC2 which is helpful in mud. that's the top button under the t-case settings (under the lo/high buttons)

i don't know anything about SERVICE 4WD, probably i'd take it to a dealer if such a warning appeared

That's funny that this topic came up. Although I am having no problems with mine, I was reading through the manual last night and was somewhat confused about when and where to use the different settings. My prior vehicle was an 03 BMW X5, so I never had to do anything with the AWD. Thanks for the help.

yeah, the h2 is a vehicle that rewards you for sort of feeling out all the modes and things and seeing what works best for you in a given situation. Probably what works best for one person won't necessarily for another and so on. I think thats alot of fun - messing around trying to find the best mode. the rear locker isn't always good.

usually the error part of trial and error means you're buried, though.

I had the same problem. The service 4x4 light came on when shifting from 4 low to 4 high and stayed on till i had turned off the ignition and restarted the vechicle. The top button is 4 high with a 60/40 split the next down is also 4 high with a 50/50 split. Next is the 4 low 50/50 split and you must be in neutral and stopped to get to this drive. After you are in low you can use the tow option and the dif lock.
