Do you think I should let some air out of the rear tires? I thought I would let a pound or two out of each. I don't scare easily, especially when driving. I'm usually a rock. When that car started driving cockeyed down a hill with no guard rail and a 50 foot drop, it really freaked me out, let alone driving 70 miles back to Denver on I-70. The good news is there shouldn't be too much snow as we get closer to Denver. We leave Monday afternoon.

don't let air out of your tires.... that only works offroad... and for different reasons.

I'm from the plains obviously. I have taken road trips before, but never had to drive in snow on interstates that have steep inclines. My idea was to stay behind the slow-moving semi's so their tires push the snow out of my car's path and I have less of a chance of loosing grip. Is that a good idea?

Also yesterday, the rear tires were spinning going uphill on the highways, even though I barely gave it enough gas to accellerate. I'm giving myself a few hours to get to the airport. We will be taking off in snow and landing in severe thunderstorms in Chicago. This is why we decided we are going to drive from now on, in our current or new H3/H2.

Anyway, any advice driving with crappy traction on a snowy interstate is most welcome.

best advice I can give is don't drive faster than the semi's...

I wouldn't drive in overdrive either... the less you have to hit your brakes the better... engine braking is very effective if you have the car in a lower gear...

don't swerve.

brake early at intersections.

if antilock kicks in don't let up... hold the pedal down.

steer into the skid

wear two pair of underwear

Shifting it to 3 basically makes the trans not shift higher then 3rd gear, thus turning Overdrive off, correct? Its been a while with an automatic

The vacation was great Trey.  Thanks for asking.

The drive down the mountain, however, was one of the most terrifying experiences I think I've ever had.  Driving a RWD Charger down a ice and snow covered interstate that was mostly 5% and 6% grades was not good.  This car had half-worn street tires.  I had a full tank of gas, all of our luggage pushed toward the wheels in the trunk and my wife in the back seat so I could have as much weight on the rear wheels as possible.  That helped alot in the snow, but on the highway, well, I followed the semi's for the first 30 miles til dry road, when we got more towards Denver.  I probably topped out at 20 MPH for the first 30 miles or so.  At one point going down hill I lost traction even though I wasn't giving it any gas.

My wife told me once we got to dry road that she could feel the car moving from side to side the entire way, but didn't want to tell me

Those tires were so bad, that even with that puny 2.7L V6 we had, when you gave it even the tiniest bit of gas, the wheels would spin, and with no traction control, I had to have the radio off and listen for the tires and watch the Tach the entire time to make sure I wasn't spinning the tires.  In order to get up the hills, I had to gain momentum because if I didn't, I would barely make it up.

It's because of this experience I will never own a 2WD vehicle again, and have an entire new mindset on what kind of cars/trucks I will own.  AWD or 4WD.  That's it.

Now see Muddy that wasn't too bad. My wife wanted a Charger but after I saw the car battery is in the trunk and how it handled I said no way.
