I bought the nice K&N CAI and put it on yesterday as my first task since I just got home. I put it on everything was just right like the directions said. Then before I cranked the car I noticed theres not a lot of clearance by the fan. I turned the fan by hand and it was knicking it just barely. Is there a better system? The factory air tube sits way back from the fan so whats up with this dumb design.

Looking at pictures of them on the net... is it possible they sent you one for the H3?  it seems to have a longer tube before the bend to the air filter...

OK... so at least I know I'm an idiot....

I searched for some pictures of vkh2's ride...  he has the K&N...

so... I guess I would suggest double checking everything to make sure it is pushed in and tight.

Its all h2 part numbers and everything was pushed in, i even filed down the fan blades a tad to at least avoid the constant ticking. I think I am just gonna sell it and stay stock. There was a Donaldson air filter in the factory air box is this normal? I know it was special in camaro/firebirds to get it.

If it matches up to the pics that got posted, I would say they sent you the right one. The Tube for the H3 I believe is smaller in dia due to the different TB.

I would check your fit on the TB and see if it is all the way on, it could be they cut the elbow a little longer on the TB side. I would trim the rubber hose that connects to the TB, that would bring it closer to the engine and away from your fan. I would not trim the fan it could throw it out of balance a little and at high speeds it will wobble.

If anyones interested or you know of anyone interested I put in on Ebay already. Its assembled still so whomever can avoid the hassle. I triple checked and the plastic tube was as flush as can be with the throttle body so unless I were to file down the plastic tube about 1/2 an inch it was not going to fit. Sorry I took no pics didnt think about it when doing the install. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=020&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&viewitem=&item=300184891404&rd=1

I tried the same system on mine. I had about 1/4 inch clearance.
