I hope someone can help me here. I live in Perth (Australia), however have been in the US for 9 months and bought a Hummer H2 over here (US). I am about to return home and plan to import the Hummer back with me to Australia. I guess I will also need to change the car to RHD. Has anyone had any experience at this? Can someone point me in the right direction? I have read most of the information on the internet regarding the taxes etc, but would like to talk to someone who has actually done it to see what their real life experience was like.

I've never done this myself, but I've known people that have imported cars into Europe. As far as I know, there is no obligation to convert the vehicle to right hand drive. I'm originally from Scotland and I've been used to seeing lots of LHD vehicles there. Regarding taxes and import duties, I would suggest you browse through the Australian customs service web pages for the most accurate info. I do believe that it may make a difference if you have owned the vehicle for at least six months prior to importing it. You may save on the Aussie equivalent of sales tax, but check the official sources to be sure. In general, where Europe is concerned, I'm told that it is still cheaper to import a car there from the US then to buy the same one locally. I'm informewd that a H2 is close to twice the price there as her in the US. Good luck with your transfer.
