Changing from N to R at 55MPH!
Nobody is gonna believe me what happened today.
We were comming home from 3 days camping and I got tired so I let my girlfriend to drive my H3. She put Neutral when driving down the long steep hill and then at the end of the hill she put Reverse at the speed 55mph! The car started to make strange noise of course and then the battery light showed up and averything switched off. When we pulled over we tried to start the engine, but it didn't start. We let it rest and after 2 minutes we tried to start it again and it did work. Everything was back to normal and we drove another 100 miles without any problem.
My question is, do we have to take it to the service? Or isthereany safety lock, so we have a chance, she didn't destroythe transmission?
Thank you for your answer.

RE: Changing from N to R at 55MPH!
I have never personally done this to my own vehicle but I am a trade qualified mechanic and I did a training school years agoand our teacher did this in a Holden Commodore (nothing happened) I was expecting the rear wheels to lock and send us into a spin as we were going around a bend. The reason is modern auto transmissions have what they call an ABUSE valve so if reverse gear is selected when the vehicle is traveling more than 5-10kph there is a fluid bypass opened in the trans to avoid doing damage or locking up the wheels. I believed the noise you heard was the fluid bypass as at 55mph there would be very high fluid pressure in the trans. Not sure why the engine stopped but this could be some sort of Idiot shut down due to what happened.
May be a good idea to call a dealer (not your own) to see what they say.

manual or automatic?
automatic - i don't think much of anything bad would happen, as it's usually impossible to actually get it in reverse above a couple mph. seems that there is a failsafe. not sure about the manual, though.
and probably the most important question: did you make her walk home?
