I wanted to upgrade to an Optima battery when my original died. I'd read on the forum that there was a problem putting the battery cover back on because the terminals on the Optima were different than on the original. Here's my solution:
Put the cover over the battery and then laid out where there were clearance problems. Cut off the extra material. Cleaned it up and put it back in.

I too, ended up cutting my top cover after my install of a single Red Top Optima.
Very simple proceedure
I was on the fence about the dual battery setup, which looks great, but only went with the single battery.
My old Delco is sitting on the bench and still holds a charge. I'll keep it for emergency purposes.
i stashed the complete stock box for a future restore if i sell to a purist. added a 2nd isolated reg batt for backup.
the bunger setup,supreme,outshines my "ugly"but functual stuff!,nice.
