My 2009 H3 Adventure developed this problem last week and I was able to shift from Drive to Park a few times and the key released.

This evening I could not get the key to release. I read the forum and several people suggested it was the battery. I bought a fresh battery. That did not fix the problem. I'm thinking it may be the ignition solenoid.

Any suggestions? I'm about ready to punt this thing...

It can also be the park switch is misaligned.
Technical name is the solenoid transmission shift brake interlock

Gotta pull the surround around the shifter to check it.

 

yes,park sw could be his key problem.

but the shift solenoid can be disabled so you can shift anytime anywhere without a battery for safety reasons.
its nice to reach in and go to neutral to move/drift a little on the driveway without crawling in and going thru all the bs just to move a foot! i did mine yrs ago.
no you still wont get the key wo the batt!

I do NOT recommend disabling it for many safety reasons Laziness gets people injured or killed everyday.

 

yeah, i drove for 50+yrs without some of this govt invented junk!
you could add a padlock to be xtra safe!!
if you "own"your vehicle you can handle it. no onstar either.

 

Couple of the many reasons not to.
You may leave you Kids or dog in your vehicle while you run Into a store or back in your house because you forgot something...

 

If you set the parking brake, like it says in the owners manual, the vehicle shouldn't move when put into gear. No worrying about the kids or dog.

Just going to suggest another failure. The lock cylinder could have failed. Lock cylinders usually just cause the key not to turn when you try to start it. I think you can easily remove the key in the on position by pushing a pin underneath the lock cylinder. With the cylinder removed rotate the key counter clockwise and try to remove it.
